Guest polygamer Posted June 19, 2014 Share #501  Posted June 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, thank you for sharing your experiences, towa.  There is a thread in the German SKF on M mount lenses with the SONYs A7/R:  Messsucher Objektive (Leica M, M39, Contax G & Co.) an Sony KB E-Mount - Sony Alpha Vollformat - Systemkamera Forum  with some valuable content ...  With Leica M mount lenses on the SONYs A7/R we are in an unspported environment like putting a Ferrari engine in a Toyota ...  Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.  I am satisfied with the ZEISS Distagon 4/18. Of my 21s, the Leica 2,8/21 ASPH is best, the 4/21 Voigtländer usable with the app, the 4,5/21 ZEISS I find unsatisfactory with and without app. But it is also hopeless with the M9. (NEX-6 is good.)  I am not satisfied with the 3,8/24 Elmar ASPH. I thought a newer lens, designed for digital, should be optimal. What a disappointment.  The same goes for the 2,8/28 Elmarit ASPH.  But this is life ...  SONY A7, Leica Elmarit 2,8/21 ASPH, BMW Event in Bad Nauheim.  Have a nice holiday! Welcome, dear visitor! gsgary Posted June 19, 2014 Share #502  Posted June 19, 2014 Wether the Voigtlaender nor the Leica lenses were built to work on the A7. How could it be a shame when a lens won't work well if the cam was constructed years later? Why don't you tell us that it is a shame, that the A7 won't work well with Leica lenses although Sony had the chance to built a sensor for Leica lenses? I'm not your typical rich Leica owner, I got into Leica film cameras when a friend loaned me an M6 after a day I was the owner of an M4-2 and 40mm Nokton I then bought a 28mm Ultron and had to guess framing but spotted a perfect M4-p 50 year anniversary for a little bit more than my M4-2, next I bought the 50mm Nokton asph M mount to me theses lenses produce great results, I will eventually get some Leica lenses but these will have to do for now and I will have to stick to posting in film threads
towa Posted June 19, 2014 Share #503  Posted June 19, 2014 As to the Summilux 35 asph FLE on the Sony a7. There seems to be no need for this combination, because Sony offers the much cheaper and 'superb' 2.8/35 Zeiss E-mount lens with auto-focus and stabilization.  I compared them both in different situations (aperture settings, close and distant focus, light situations). There was hardly any difference. The colours of the Zeiss were somewhat clearer (especially the green scala). Center sharpness and unsharp corners are almost the same (!). And I remember the enthousiastic comments on the quality of the Zeiss 35 at its introduction.  I would not recommend to buy the Summilux exclusively for the Sony a7. But if you possess it, it is as good on the Sony as the Zeiss, for my working mode even better. Besides the significant higher aperture (1.4 compared to 2.8 is much; I like shooting at low light and in the night; and the Summilux performs very good even wide open on the Sony; I use it much at f 1.4 or 2) I prefer the Summilux because I like manual aperture- and distance settings (especially preset of the distance for snapshots, which is impossible with the Zeiss, lacking a scale). Then the better ergonomy of the distance ring in the Summilux. At very low light you have a reliable feeling for the distance setting through the angle/position of your finger-grip ('hump') in the Summilux.  The quality of the old Summilux 35 is almost the same on the Sony a7.  Two photographs with the Summilux 35 wide open (the so called 'Blue night' at Nuremberg). JPEGs without any correction settings.  Kind regards towa Welcome, dear visitor! Guest polygamer Posted June 19, 2014 Share #504  Posted June 19, 2014 Hi, your experiences with the 35 Summilux FLE are very interesting.  I would not buy any M mount lens exclusively for the SONYs, too.  My approach is to put together my body-lens combinations using M mount lenses and the Leica M9, the SONY A7, various NEXen and, rarely, an Olympus Pen.  With my 4 50s (counting the SONY/ZEISS 1,8/55 as an honorary 50) I am happy .  The SZ 55 I bought out of curiosity. I am satisfied with the performance, but I do not like its look and feel, and it monster-shade. It is too Nikon- or Canon-like for my taste …  My 35s are  - Leica Summicron 2/35 V4  - Leica Summarit 2,5/35  - Voigtländer Nokton 1,2/35 V1  - ZEISS Biogon 2/35  The ZEISS shows the typical SONY sensor weaknesses, so it is usable at f8.  The others show the same performance, roughly. I bought the Summarit because I thought it would perform better on the A7 than the Summicron because of its more recent design (for digital) and the greater rear lens distance to the sensor.  However, major differences I cannot see. And its shade is less practical.  So, the Summicron is my favourite, and the lens I take with me when travelling with little equipment.  The Nokton is very heavy.  The SONY/ZEISS 2,8/35 I do not consider due to its limited usability (no M mount) and because in the SKF a user wrote about an aborted purchasing effort.  After getting 3 defective specimens he gave up. Photozone reported SONY quality problems, too.  After 35 focal length comes 40. So I bought an 1,4/40 Voigtländer SC, which looked promising in my preliminary trials. On holiday, I shall have more time for it.  And 40mm focal lenght reminds of my ROLLEI 35s, of which I had a few ...

Maybe it was only this single lens (despite its very good condition), as you got better results.  The Voigtlaender Ultron 1.8/21 performed not bad on the SONY, but it is heavy too.  Kind regards towa
Guest polygamer Posted June 19, 2014 Share #506  Posted June 19, 2014 Hi, maybe my Summicron 2/35 shows such good performance because it was at the spa in Solms …  My favourite and best 21 on the A7 is the Elmarit 2,8/21 ASPH.  The Voigtländer Skopar 4/21 is good on the A7 with the SONY app.  Haptically, it is very Leica-like ... Ken has had a quick play with my A7 but it was after tea and the light was not great so I'm going to let him have it again for the day, while I was there today I told him about this thread and Thomas' s shots with the tri elmar because Ken has both and the biggest collection of Leica cameras and lenses it's his fault im hooked on Leica

3D-Kraft.com Posted June 22, 2014 Share #517 Â Posted June 22, 2014 I've just got to get to the bottom of wide-angle M lens usage before I buy the A7 or A7R Â The A7R is way better in many aspects, especially if you plan to use it for landscape photography. There are some more compatibility issues with M-mount lenses not designed for this type of sensor (it's not a SONY sensor weakness, it's just a matter of different design goals and sometimes strange expactations here regarding compatibilty with legacy lenses). Â The range of usable UWA lenses is small and so the solution is easy: Get a WATE 16-21mm or wait for Zeiss native FE 16-35 which is expected for Photokina in September. Â To see how the combination of A7R with Leica WATE 16-18-21 works, Mr. Davis, you may refer to the full-sized files accessible in the link # 454 of this thread. Â Browsing them on a HD monitor such as Dell UltraSharp 27" monitor (2440 x 1400 pixels) for a fair assessment. Â For myself I can accept the performance of Leica M 28/2 ASPH, 28/2.8 (non-ASPH) and 35 mm above on A7R as I'm just an amatueur, enjoying mainly the part of image around the center instead of the far reaching corner (of course, the better the better). Â All the best.
