The 55 f1.8 is a superb. Recently, I was in Ethiopia and I had both my M240 and A7R with an assortment of M and R lenses plus the 55.. But the combo that impressed me was the A7R w/ 55. Here is a link to some of my photos, Zenfolio | N.S. Ng | Ethiopia April 2014

1-7 and 14-18 were captured with the 55.

Hi, I have compared the 55 SONY/ZEISS with the Leica Summicron 2/50 and the

ZEISS Planar 2/50 informally (quick and dirty).

On the A7, the SONY 55 appears to be better. This could be due to the systems-effect

- native vs. non-native lenses - but anyway ...

It would be interesting to see how the Leica Summicron 2/50 ASPH performs. I do not have it - and do not plan to buy it, however.

The SONY 55 shows that you can take good pictures with modest means ... ---

I found that the Leica WATE 16-18-21 very useful in taking pictures for palaces and cathedrals in Russia.

IMHO that is the essence of the problem with current lens design for '35mm' cameras, far too bulky for what must be a very slight improvement over such as the 50 Summicron. If I wanted to cart that much bulk and weight about I would have bought a Hasselblad

The Leica APO Summicron 50mm f/2 ASPH weighs 300g (and for the shorter flange distance of an A7 / A7R you have to add the adapter's weight and size). The Zeiss FE 1.8/55 - although 10% longer focal length and 1/3 stop faster and including an autofocus - weighs 281g.

Comparing apples and pears is always misleading...

The main bulk culprit is the sun-shade. For a 50mm lens, it wins the prize of the "Franken-Shade". This could have been made smaller, judging from all the other shades I have.

You are comparing a lens hood that is designed for optimal stray light protection (and reversible) on an EVF camera to lenses with more cosmetical lens hoods designed to not obscure the optical range finder of a Leica M too much...

Hi, Steve Huff writes a lot ...

In this case, it appears to be accurate.

In the German Systemkamera Forum someone had the ZEISS Planar 2/50

and bought the new Voigtländer 1,5/50.

I compared the Voigtländer Nokton 1.5/50 ASPH to the Leica Summilux 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. Center sharpness and bokeh of the Summilux is better. Sharpness of the Nokton 1.5/50 half way to the edges (where you typically would position the eyes of a portrait person) is better than that of the Summilux.

Zeiss FE 1.8/55 is far ahead both lenses in terms of sharpness across the whole frame and comes close to the bokeh quality of the Summilux.

The SONY 35 I did not consider after reading the sad story in the Systemkamera Forum of a user giving up buying it after having tried the 4th defective SONY 2,8/35.

If you read all posts about the Zeiss FE 2.8/35 over there, this user was far from representitive and the story about the way he "compared" and justified quality was far from credible. Some do cherry picking and some do the opposite. Both is not objective.

SONY is a loss-making company and appears to have some serious quality problems.

The quality control certificate for my SONY 1,8/55 had a different serial# than my lens.

Their camera business is doing well. Their problems are caused by other parts of their business where quality becomes less momentous than just price of less expensive offerings from Korean and Chinese competitors.

Did you receive your lens in a sealed box? Otherwise it is not sure that lens or box have been exchanged by dealer (e.g. in a returns processing). As far as I remember you bought it through a special offer from a France dealer?

Another question:

Some time ago there was a discussion about which photos can be posted here. The result was this post from the Admin: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/303685-sony-a7-thread-merged-174.html#post2576708

After seeing more and more photos from Zeiss lenses, CV Noktons/Ultrons/Heliars, Jupiters etc. on A7 / A7R - did I miss a post here that widened the permission?
