High Island birds

I am fortunate to live a short distance from some outstanding birding sites & recently acquired a Telyt 560 f5.6 for the Viso III which I use with my M8

on the principle that one can never have enough focal length for birds, I practiced with this lens in my backyard and ventured to High Island, Texas for my first outing with it

here are the results from my first venture

roseate spoonbills are in great abundance in the island's rookery

egrets nest there as well and this Momma is tending to a newborn

I practiced MF techniques with this "trombone" lens and worked it out to my satisfaction ...I got many birds in flight, but unfortunately I neglected to pay attention adequately to exposure & lost many shots to overexposure ...here is a roseate spoonbill in full flight

I plan on returning and will certainly be more careful with exposure ...the Viso/M8/Telyt 560 combination proved very workable for me ...now I have to explore High Island and my surrounding treasures more, to find ways of getting in closer without risking being attacked by alligators or hostile snakes :)

I have more here along with larger versions & shooting information

WOW! Nice shots. I really like the 2 and 3. I never knew shots like this were possible with the M. High Island is great for birding, you captured some beauties. Wish I still lived down there.

High Island is a great resource

in order to shoot these with an M, you really need to find a Viso, which makes the M into an SLR of sorts

the long lenses available for this system are older designs and have some CA issues, but nothing that cannot be easily handled in post ...they are sharp

these lenses are all MF, but I don't find this too great a disadvantage, once you get the hang of it ...I set exposure manually after taking a few test shots in A mode, which caused me to lose quite a few winners, as I did not chimp as much as I should have ...this was from my first outing & I am pretty good about learning from my mistakes :) ...the Viso III has a mode that allows for faster shutter release, but the M8 cannot meter with this, so I have used manual settings when shooting birds & such ...I just have to remember to set exposure about 1 to 1.5 stops under when shooting egrets & spoonbills!

amazingly these lenses are much less expensive than those available at similar focal length for SLRs ...I paid about 1/3 the price for my 560 Telyt than what a similar MF lens would have cost me for my F mount

these were all from crops of about 1/2 to 1/3 ...the resolution of the M8 helps & I love the color it delivers, though I am resigned to tweaking the greens in PS with it as ir/cut filters for this lens are not likely to be available any time soon & would likely be astronomical in price
