Dear All-

 

Now I am confused ...

 

So my dealer just got my WATE for me - with a 67 mm filter holder. Now I see posted that I can use a 49 mm, or a 55 mm --- What, friends, is the correct answer? What hood do I use?

The 67 is for Leica's filter holder. You can't use it with the lens hood. The 49 is for the machined custom adapter that will allow the lens hood to be used with the glass from a 49mm fliter. Search the threads and you will find the long discussion on this and the address for John Milich if you're interested. I have no idea where the reference to 55mm may have come from.

I have a sample of John's adapter here (beautifully made) and am just waiting for the test lens and filter to arrive. Based on what I'm hearing so far, you may want to get a 49 and go this route.

Just did folks! Now to find the 49 mm B+W IR cut filter .... That will take a bit of searching!

The B&W 486 might not be the best choice for that lens. Better a Leica filter (for the WATE) if you can track one down.

I have not received my adapter from John but I can attest to his timeliness.Within 2 days of ordering, the filter adapter was ready & is now on the way! Will report once received but I have heard the quality is evident.Now the Leica 49 mm filter!

And until I can get my WATE and a 49mm filter (in short supply) I have a Leica 67mm WATE filter adapter and a 67-to-55 reducer, so I can use a 55mm filter that I can reuse on another lens later...that way I don't need a 67mm filter ever...

But, by the way, there is no doubt that a Leica filter and John's adapter are the best long-term solution....

A few questions:

 

1) For Guy, John M and Sean- will the Leica 49 mm IR filter (instead of the B and W 49 mm) work with John's custom WATE adapter ? Sean, If so, why is it better than the B & W?

 

2) If one uses the WATE with a film M camera at 16 mm and/ or 18 mm will John's custom adapter and the 49 mm filter work without problems? Or do film users need the Leica 67 mm adapter if they want to use any filters?

PS. To clarify my last post, I'm refering to non IR filters with film use.

Doug what i have found testing the B+W filter in either 49mm or even 60mm filters sizes i was getting good results at 21mm but better cyan correction with the leica filter. Than on the 16mm and 18mm setting the leica clearly cleaned up the cyan cast and the B+W left residue cyan cast in the corners. So were highly recommending the leica filter . You can cheat with the B+W by setting the lens code wider than the actually focal length Example shoot at 21mm and set at 18mm Shot at 18mm set at 16mm than 16mm you are stuck. But you can work like this for a time until you get your hands on the leica 49mm

 

 

Now the adapter is specifically for the M8 and it's crop factor . If you use it on a film body it will get in the way. leica made the filter holder setup for FF camera's but the Wate adapter John produced is strictly for the M8.

the adapter i have been sending out requires the retaining ring from the 49mm B+W filter, and the glass. If one chooses to use the Leica filter, you will have the right sized glass, but no retianing ring, as the Leica uses something incompatible. For future runs, i will be providing a retaing ring with the adapter and can make it availbale to early adapter adopters who need it.
