Blog .. Wordpress or Tumblr

Recommended Posts

Wordpress.

Tumblr is more of a mini-blog service for posting very short stories or single images. But it all depends on what you prefer and what you need. They are both free services (wordpress.com and tumblr.com) so why don't you register on both and take them for a spin and see which you prefer?

Wordpress, but only self-hosted. Blogger is better for SEO but the canned themes are very limited and boringly recognisable because they all look the same.

That apart, blogging is a far more personal, powerful and versatile platform for reaching a wider audience than image sharing sites like Flickr and 500px.

I'm an ardent anti-social media sorta guy, I do not have a FB or Twitter account, never will.

We did however do a 2 month trip to Europe recently, and used Blogger to keep a blog. This was primarily so friends and family could be on the trip vicariously.

It worked a treat, very nice, and simple to operate, used the iPad every where we went.

I love WordPress.com - it's completely hassle and worry free experience.

I don't see the huge advantage in self-hosted WordPress(.org) compared to .com for general blogging use.

I've hosted my blog on WordPress.com for a couple of years now, and I'm very happy with it: Bo Photography

WordPress.com has ZeManta integration directly in the WebUI now, and with the WordPress.com community and publications, tagging and reblogging system it's rather easy to get viewers very quickly! You won't get any of this on a self-hosted WordPress.org solution.

Tumblr. Purely because of how seamless and accessible the end user experience is for those who want to check out your work. Given the quality of iOS app development and the expansiveness of Tumblr's active network, the shortcoming of complete web design control [a great strength of Wordpress] is of minor importance to me.
