mblaze Posted October 24, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2013 RRS BH-30 is my favorite small head.
Jeff S Posted October 24, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 24, 2013 Also BH-30 head [mounted on RRS TQC-14 tripod]. Lots of old threads on tripods and heads (via search box) using various Ms, all basically similar size and weight. Jeff
Guest roey Posted October 24, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 24, 2013 I am happy with the BH-25. It is lighter and a bit smaller than the BH-30 but offers less features and carries less weight.
leica1215 Posted October 24, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted October 24, 2013 Thanks all, it seems that RRS is well regard, I will look into it

tobey bilek Posted October 24, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 24, 2013 Leica has new one . Investigate. I has previous medium and tall ones and they are very nice. A touch of the lock puts the camera in place and it does not drift as you tighten or after. Best I ever found. Downside is price.
Guido Posted October 24, 2013 Share #9 Posted October 24, 2013 Downside is price. Upside is availability of identical models from FLM. Leica is just rebadging them.
Leicaiste Posted October 27, 2013 Share #10 Posted October 27, 2013 Thanks all, it seems that RRS is well regard, I will look into it I am using the RRS BH-30 LR ballhead with the B2-40 LR quick-release clamp. And on the Leica M the RSS BM240 (Replacement base for Leica M240). My tripod is the GITZO Traveler GT1542T. A perfect match IMHO.
leica1215 Posted October 28, 2013 Author Share #11 Posted October 28, 2013 great to know, I have one on order now, but not the LPlate , do you find L plate that use often ? Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
Leicaiste Posted October 28, 2013 Share #12 Posted October 28, 2013 great to know, I have one on order now, but not the LPlate , do you find L plate that use often ? No, I didn't order it. My guess was that without the LPlate I could easily slip the BM240 flat in any bag or pocket.
algrove Posted October 28, 2013 Share #13 Posted October 28, 2013 I use the RRS L plate #MC-L and put the screw in position #3 counting up from the L. Works fine on the M240 base. If you ever get an M grip then this can be left permanently (if wanted) on the grip and just use the grip's built-in thumb wheel for grip removal with MC-L attached whenever changing battery or SD card. I am also hoping that once grips are out we can attach the L section on the right side of camera thereby giving plenty of room when working with RF at the now top instead of having it down at the bottom and near tripod and L bracket. albireo_double Posted October 29, 2013 Share #14 Posted October 29, 2013 Arca Swiss P0 is the head I use, with the quick lock clamp. Tripod is Gitzo 3541LX, I think. Just ordered the RRS set for the M240, looking forward to using that combination.
algrove Posted October 29, 2013 Share #15 Posted October 29, 2013 I always get a little bigger than I think I need. Glad I did that when now using long R lenses mounted directly on tripod.
mblaze Posted October 30, 2013 Share #16 Posted October 30, 2013 Let me add that while it's overkill for most M-style shooting and while ballheads are certainly convenient for general shooting, for precise composition, there's nothing like a good 3-way geared head. And as geared heads go, there's nothing like the Arca-Swiss cube. It's tiny for a geared head, but still larger and heavier than the smaller ballheads that you can easily get away with with an M. Leicaiste Posted October 30, 2013 Share #17 Posted October 30, 2013 The Arca-Swiss Cube is a wonderful piece of engineering but was designed with the Arca-Swiss Large Format camera in mind by Mr. Philippe Vogt. I love it. But it is certainly overkill with a Leica IMO. The Arca-Swiss D4 will offer almost the same settings as the Cube but in a much more compact form. dennersten Posted October 31, 2013 Share #18 Posted October 31, 2013 Upside is availability of identical models from FLM. Leica is just rebadging them. It's not correct! The Leica one does include an integrated quick releseplate, and have different style of the knobs. So it's certainly not a simple rebadge. But i guess FLM is producing the Tripods.
