US1.00. And I was soooo close. Only 155 made-best zoom ever in the world.

I will have to live with its cheap relative that isn't too bad in its own right: 35mm-70mm f4 Vario Elmar. :) And it is much smaller and lighter and includes a macro mode.

Sadly, the price of second-hand samples of the 28-90 zoom (£4k ish?) renders it to many users almost as unattainable as the cult 35-70/2.8. I'm not sure I would choose to spend that sort of money if I hadn't already got one.

For me, even if the 35-70/2.8 was in plentiful supply without any cult status, I think I would choose the superb 28-90 zoom. Especially as a travel lens, I would value the increased focal length range more than the maximum aperture at 70mm. Doubtless any differences in optical quality would not be significant in practical use.

I have read reports in the fairly distant past that some samples of the cult 35-70/2.8 do not preserve its focus setting throughout the whole of its zoom range, that is to say, it should be regarded as a vari-focal lens rather a true zoom. Does anyone have any reliable information on this?

I thought it did. Have to get mine out to know for sure. The manual makes no mention of this.

That's exactly why I asked. I definitely recall reading a report to that effect a good while ago, and it surprised me very much at the time.

LCE Guildford list one today https://www.lcegroup.co.uk/Used/Leica-VARIO-ELMARIT-R-F2.8-35-70MM-ASPH-(ROM)_167718.html   i realise we should not advertise but they are listed so infrequently and there might be a forum member seeking same .. and the price is interesting reading.

LOL, it will never sell, typo?

Gary

Not a typo Gary … very scarce lens and would likely cost more if still available new.  See Leica Pocket Book 8th Edition for its impeccable specification.

Hmmm, misread it Dunk, sorry. It is a nice looking lens, then. Quick glance had me thinking the "ordinary" 35-70. Wrong.

Gary

There are three Leica 35-70R lenses - four if you count both of the 35-70/3.5 Sigma designed models … and five including the Angenieux but which does not appear in The Leica Pocket Book 8th Edition.
