Timmyjoe Posted October 10, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted October 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Been looking at the Leica 50mm Summicron R lenses, hoping to find a Leica piece of glass that will come close to rendering images like my 50mm Summicron M does on film with my rangefinder Leica. Â I am hoping someone with experience with these lenses may be able to answer my questions. Â I see two different versions at most of the places I look. One version has Made In Germany and goes up to about serial number #2755000 and the second version has Made In Canada and starts at about serial number #2756000. I have read that the earlier Made In Germany serial numbered lenses are Version 1 and the later Made In Canada serial numbered lenses are Version 2. Â Optically, how are the lenses different and does anyone have experience as to which version might render similar to my Summicron M lens (current non-asph version)? Â Thanks for any and all input on this.

sc_rufctr Posted October 10, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted October 10, 2013 They both render much the same as the M Summicron so therefore are fantastic. The later the lens the better. (only because of use and condition) And there's nothing wrong with the Canadian lens but this does bother some Leica collectors... They prefer "Made in Germany" Â The 50 Summicron seem to be the standard by which other lenses have always been judged and that's for a good reason. Â I'm sure others will chime in but you really can't go wrong with this lens regardless of vintage. (although condition is everything - I would not buy a lens with damaged elements)
Joop van Heijgen Posted October 11, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted October 11, 2013 I have both the Leicaflex SL version and the R version of the Summicron R2.0/50 and there is in fact no difference in performance and they are close to the M version of the 2.0/50 Summicron....except in price...The M version is much more expensive...
