David K Posted October 10, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Leica M-E with a 35mm Summilux lens which I would like to take on a dream cruise we have an opportunity to take next June from Scotland through Norway and ending in Denmark. I have not flown since 9/11 and would like to know what is involved in taking a digital camera on an international air flight and through customs in various countries. I obviously don't want to trust this baby to checked luggage. Is taking a photo and showing it to the TSA screeners enough to get on a plane with an M-E? Advertisement Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Hi David K, Take a look here International travel w/digital Leica. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
IkarusJohn Posted October 10, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 10, 2013 Sure - I'm recently back from a trip to London & Paris. My camera stayed with me the whole time in my camera bag - it had to go through the security scanner, but that was no drama.
hoppyman Posted October 10, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 10, 2013 Keep your camera and any other valuables with you as carry on luggage.. No problems with security scanning of the camera or memory cards in your bag. A battery fitted inside the camera should be OK. Extra Lithium Ion batteries carried loose may be a problem. Check with your authority at home. I always pack my spares separately well wrapped in my check in luggage.
IkarusJohn Posted October 10, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 10, 2013 Good point, Geoff. When I checked in at Heathrow to come back, for the first time, I was asked if I had any lithium ion batteries in my check in luggage. I said no, and asked why. I was told that what can happen is the batteries can be affected by altitude, and if they rub together they can cause a fire which cannot be dealt with in the hold. I had three spare batteries in my carry on luggage and was told this was not a problem. Cheers John
rjans Posted October 12, 2013 Share #5 Posted October 12, 2013 There are new shipping regulations. Certainly from Japan. I found that several shops indicated that a camera would be shipped without the Li-ion battery. I did not have any problems with a few batteries in my camera bag.
