Nick De Marco Posted October 6, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted October 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Being a quite dirty boy I managed to smear all sorts of filth on my M 240 sensor in no time at all. I called Leica Mayfair to see how much it would cost to have it properly cleaned and they told me they clean it (with a 3 stage process) for free, as they do with all Leica digitals however old. Very nice, and they did a good job. So thanks.

gravastar Posted October 6, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted October 6, 2013 That's great news - and a relief. I've always cleaned the M8 and M9 without problems but on my last trip to the US I couldn't get marks off of the M9 cover glass. A Leica dealer offering the service also tried without success. Taking a photo with a pin hole and magnifying the image it looks as if the antireflection coating on the cover glass is flaking off. You can see bright spots by reflected light. That's made me very wary of DIY with the M (240). Â Â Bob.
Guest WPalank Posted October 8, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted October 8, 2013 Bright spots can be oil based contaminants. Just like when doing the laundry, one needs the correct tool for the job. All the wiping in the world with the incorrect solvent will do nothing. Visible Dust makes a great product for removing oil or lubricant based contaminants, Smear Away. Smear Away. Liquid cleaner for sensor. Â Anyway, sounds like a great service from Leica Mayfair. Thanks for posting Nick.

Unless of course you bought it from them, in which case I understand from their website they offer one free sensor clean in the first 12 months to customers buying a 'new M9' (or S2) camera from them (I assume that now means M-E, Monochrom or Typ 240). Â The Leica Mayfair sensor cleaning service normally costs from 72 quid, to over 100 quid for the same day service. Â If it is now free, they'll be flattened in the stampede.
