Mylek Posted September 23, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I just realized probably a firmware update, that i've been converting to DNG already compressed files each times i was importing them. Is there a real difference in quality in shooting compressed or uncompressed in the M9 and then importing them in LR with convert to DNG or Copy other than files size? How are you doing by compressed in M9 then copy or uncompressed and convert to DNG? Is there any advantage to update the M9's DNG to the latest format in the convert to DNG? Regards! Mylek Posted September 30, 2013 Author Share #2 Posted September 30, 2013 Maybe my post is not clear enough. I'll like to know if there is a real difference in quality in shooting compressed and use COPY when importing the files in LR or shooting uncompressed and use CONVERT to DNG other than the files size? Is there any advantage to update the M9's files DNG v1.0 to the latest v1.3 if i use convert to DNG when i import with LR?
Chuck68 Posted October 2, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 2, 2013 There is no difference in quality doing the "Copy as DNG" on import. The compression is lossless. Lossy compression is available elsewhere in the program, from the export dialog for example. "Copy as DNG" will update DNG version and metadata is updated and various fields changed from what was originally provided by the camera. This may lead to compatibility problems with other applications in certain cases. This seems to be camera model dependant, my M8 has no problems, my X2 has problems. So on the whole, probably better to "Copy" rather than "Copy As DNG" unless saving space is a requirement, and keep the files in their "from camera" state, Hope that helps, S
Rick Posted October 2, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 2, 2013 Shoot your M8 as uncompressed. Import to LR as Copy as DNG. This scheme gives you the best file out of your camera and saves the file in a lossless format in LR that will display much faster and speed up the develop module significantly as compared to just using "Copy."
