I was pointing out that "The Leica Way" passage says what the one from the IIIa manual says, and in almost the same words. Focus can be changed for near or distant objects or subjects because it has to be changed. Magnification changes because focal length changes: although the change is too slight to be important.

We are in agreement here, I was merely clarifying your statement: Neither says that the adjustment is -- or is not -- once and for all.

Which is true, but for the benefit of readers clearly stating that it is not once and for all. You also have now made that clear.

I would dispute that. At close distances I obtain a much clearer image with which to focus if I adjust. That is unconnected with the focal length of the lens in use, in fact the effect is seen with no lens at all attached

I spoke of the R/F telescope. Like a camera lens, it is an optical system. In both cases, setting focus to different distances changes focal length in absolute terms, although the change is not important in a practical way for most purposes.
