I would not lessen the merits of either. The RX1R has an amazing sensor and low light performance with the great Zeiss 35 Sonnar designed lens. The M240 ergonomics are now so much better than the M9. I also have the M-M, but I am somewhat reluctant to use, not because of its outstanding B&W ability, but purely I have moved on to the ergonomics of the new M. The new high 3" screen, LV when needed, accurate RF focusing to name a few. Prior to having received the M240, I would use the RX1 equally with the M9P, particularly for low light shots. Now I just take the M240, as it does it all, other than the high ISO performance is not quite as good as the RX1R and of course no AF. The AF with the RX1R is very good, and the MF works well once setup correctly. I have both and intend to use them. On overseas trips, my fiancee uses the RX1R, while I roam the streets with the M:) Finally the ease of manual focusing is much easier with the M240, as you have a choice both RF and LV if needed. It's a very expensive camera with expensive lens. Instead of experimenting with cameras, buy yourself a nice Insurance for the camera, that will give you peace of mind and focus where it counts: that is in your photography. For your work you are already using the best, money can buy. Also, why doesn't Leica allow for a remap of the M button? Why should they? Would you undermine like this your own product? Understand your M button concerns, but I just overlook it's there and use my M as a RF until I mount R lenses and then use it with EVF. By the way the EVF on the RX-1 is better to my eyes than the M EVF and with the eye sensor it switches automatically without having to fumble for a button under the EVF eye piece. Hope the next Leica EVF will do the same. I find the $15 eye cup on the M EVF helps me keep out extraneous light like the eye cup on the RX-1. hyper67 Posted September 10, 2013 Author Share #25 Posted September 10, 2013 Well my concern isn't just the m button its the whole package really...if sony has come up with such a staggering performance for me at least if I can feel comfortable in taking the shots I want with the RX1 I would go for it...a tool is a tool is a tool....Unfortunately I live in a place where getting a hold of one - I called the Sony rep and they don't carry it - is not possible so I will probably end up buying the M to continue my work and buy a second hand RX1 to test and see if I like it.... How would allowing the user to determine the function of the M button undermine the camera? I would love for the ISO button to be placed where the M button is located. Rick Posted September 10, 2013 Share #27 Posted September 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having shot nearly 3,000 photographs side by side, so far in the last 8 days, with the M and RX1, I can tell you that it is a mixed bag. Depending on the situation both can be exceptional or frustrating. But, overall, the RX1 with the central focus point and focus-recompose, can be deadly fast. But, nothing is less fiddly than MF/RF. leicatraveller Posted October 3, 2013 Share #31 Posted October 3, 2013 i own both M240 and RX1 looking at your site (i really appreciate your style of photography...the photo of the luna park with a man standing on a tall wall on background is beatiful...it remind me a little the style of magnum photographer nikos economopoulos.....) for me the RX1 is perfect camera, i m also practice street /reportage and sometimes leica is a little bit "slow"... its rare to see good photos on this forum , very nice ! Extensive menus, AF, fly-by-wire manual focus, considerable digital lens corrections, electronic viewfinder, etc. An excellent camera no doubt, but an electronic marvel for all that... On my first outing with the M I have on loan, I spend forever trying to work out how to set exposure compensation. On the RX1 you just turn a nice little dial. If you want purity, you need to shoot an M6. Both the M and RX1 are digital cameras with extensive menus. Whether one is more extensive than the other does not make one more or less digital.
