Advertisement Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Hi waloszek, Take a look here My Review of the X VARIO. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
barjohn Posted August 25, 2013 Author Share #42 Posted August 25, 2013 It is a wish list of sorts. I think Leica would be helping themselves to make this camera more desirable and therefore to improve sales by doing as many of these as possible. The competition is getting more challenging with the New GX-7 and now the big price reduction of the Fuji lines with lenses. Sony will be soon announcing new cameras too so the XV needs to be seen as a truly outstanding camera worth the extra cost. That means publishing lens specs too as it wither has really fine optics or it doesn't. If it doesn't it can't expect to compete for very long. Guest badbob Posted August 25, 2013 Share #43 Posted August 25, 2013 Most if not all of these should be doable in firmware, and are excellent suggestions. I do wonder though, whether the camera is able to view a full size JPEG in real time and doing the things you want it to do. I just don't remember ever viewing a JPEG on a camera screen and zooming in, see the same detail I see at 100 percent on the computer.
barjohn Posted August 25, 2013 Author Share #44 Posted August 25, 2013 My recollection is that you could on the RX-1. The same was true on the X100s. When you went to maximum magnification, the image did not break apart like it does on the XV.
Guest badbob Posted August 26, 2013 Share #45 Posted August 26, 2013 I have to try that on the Monochrom then when the battery is charged (why do they send only one battery?), since everything I've had at X Vario and below doesn't go anywhere near 100 percent detail on playback. colonel Posted August 30, 2013 Share #46 Posted August 30, 2013 I have made a few changes to above jpg settings that I will publish later. I have given a lot of thought to firmware improvements I would like to see in the next firmware release. They are as follows in priority order: I may add a few others as I play some more. ad 1 and 4) These are the most important ones for me... ad 6) The Delete/Focus button might also be used as a toggle so that you can switch the magnified area on and off. The quality of the magnified section should also be improved but I know from Ricoh that this worked only, when the magnified section covered the whole screen... ad 7) This is one for dreaming... Best regards, Gerd 1. Improved AF speed and accuracy, especially in small spot mode. not a biggie for me, but more is good 2. Make 16x magnification review usable by using super fine resolution jpg instead of low res image. not a biggie for me, but nice 3. Allow higher min shutter speed in auto ISO. Essential. 4. Display ISO selected by camera on 1/2 press of shutter. Not important for me 5. Provide a means to review images while magnified ( change selected image). not a biggie for me, but nice 6. Allow for longer display of magnified area during manual focus. Great idea 7. Provide support for new Olympus EVF-4, current EVF-2 is too far behind in resolution and contrast. Nice if possible 8. Adjust jpg in all standard to more closely match DNGs. I don't believe this is possible, as each RAW processor software has its own interpretation. I don't care anyway as I don't use JPG 9. Improve startup time. not a biggie for me but nice I would add: 10. Exposure lock button allocation 11. Some customization of buttons would be nice 12. Can the menu workflow be changed so the centre button is the OK button 13. Ability to disable play button when using EVF, as my nose keeps hitting it. Once in play mode, the time taken to come out makes me loose the picture 14. Focus peaking please best rgds

That means publishing lens specs too as it wither has really fine optics or it doesn't. If it doesn't it can't expect to compete for very long. Leica is not about competing on price. For example the X-E1 and 18-55mm makes more sense for the cash strapped. Why do I favour the XV over the X-E1 combo ? 1. Lovely build quality. Really exciting and good feeling just to pick up the xvario. makes you want to use it. 2. Zoom range is sharp throughout, don't need to worry about upping the exposure 3. f3.5 at 28mm is enough light for me as a walkaround. Only 0.5 stop worse then cameas like the Leica, Nikon or Ricoh fixed 28/35mm. 4. Colours are outstanding. IMHO they pip the current leaders, Canon and Fuji. This really surprises me as the M9 and M8 always needed a bit of work in LR. 5. Bayer filter. Sorry but I am not sure that Adobe will ever get completely on top of xtrans. for example, even in the latest LR the sharpening does not work IMHO 6. I like to publish and get feed back on some pictures and also to look at others. I think that this forum is much better arranged then the infinite thread view of the fuji-x forum. I also like the people here, the people in the Leica forum in dpvreview. Leica forum people are mostly !!! a great bunch. From Leica's point of view, the price is not steep, for a german made camera and a custom lens, with a 20-30% premium over the much "less well built" fixed lens X2. However I think the general market will not see the innovation here for the price, compared to the M9 say, which was the smallest FF available at the time. So I think that this camera will continue to be a niche product for those attracted, those who like Leica and those who like fine products and are prepared to pay the premium. I also suspect slightly that this camera may be a stepping stone to an interchangeable APS camera system. It has the girth and build to do it, unlike the X2 which IMHO, although a very nice camera, doesn't.

barjohn Posted August 30, 2013 Author Share #49 Posted August 30, 2013 Just to be clear, I was not suggesting that price alone was the issue. What I was saying it that they need to improve the perceived value proposition. Clearly, Leica invested money in this product and its manufacture at a time when those resources might have been better spent elsewhere (M production and issues, for example). Inventory is sitting on dealer's shelves and they make no money unless inventory moves. Therefore, Leica needs to take action to improve the value proposition as perceived by the camera buyer. They clearly blew the introduction of the camera and that hurt its sales significantly. By making significant firmware modifications they could announce the upgraded firmware with great fanfare and try to create some buzz that would drive users that previously dismissed the camera to take a second look. I am sure Leica will address firmware issues. They take their time but usually always deal with the obvious ones at least. I think this camera will stand on its IQ. Slowly slowly it will pick up. I have read a number of threads about people with other M cameras buying it and being quite pleased with it. I am not sure it will ever be a runaway success but I am sure it will be a profitable camera for Leica. I also have a hunch its frame will be used for an interchangeable lens version. However I suspect the price of this body and lens will be half way between a x-vario and a M.
barjohn Posted September 1, 2013 Author Share #51 Posted September 1, 2013 I read an interesting thread on the DPR Forum on the possible causes of the AF issue. I intend to try and test the ideas suggested in hopes that it can help point to the problem and a potential solution and work around in the interim. I'll follow with more when I have more time. Likaleica Posted September 5, 2013 Share #52 Posted September 5, 2013 I just received my X Vario, which I decided to get while waiting for an M. Yes it has "issues." What camera doesn't? But this is an amazing little instrument. It has revived my passion for making photographs. I plan to carry it everywhere.

But this is an amazing little instrument. It has revived my passion for making photographs. I plan to carry it everywhere. Great idea! My M camera went back into the box 2 days ago waiting on a new lens, so out came the X Vario I hadn't used in a couple of weeks. What an amazing camera the X Vario is! Easy to handle and a pleasure to shoot, and a great zoom lens. This time when the M is back in action, I'll keep the X Vario handy as the much easier to carry and use camera.
