Advertisement Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Hi lambroving, Take a look here Ojai Sunrise. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pemayeux Posted April 9, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted April 9, 2007 William, I'm really enjoying your captures of Ojai. The range of tones and light in these shots are really handled well. The composition in this one is also pleasing with the stepped wall leading your eye down toward the other buildings bathed in the morning light. lambroving Posted April 12, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted April 12, 2007 Hello Paul, Â Bit disappointed that yours was the only comment. Perhaps that's because you are the only architect here? I have to say that, on a good monitor these colors at 15 minutes after sunrise are really accurate and this shot really gives a feel for the rooms in the inn on this terraced hillside. Â Was as surprised as you that the NC held so much detail in the foreground while giving an accurate impression of the morning light out there in California. Do you think your M8 could manage this huge EV range while keeping the sparkle on the roof of that round building and otherwise just compressing the whole view? Guest stnami Posted April 12, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted April 12, 2007 Bit disappointed that yours was the only comment..... could be that the image is quite ordinary and little to tantalise the visual senses........... still the colour is nice
meatboy Posted April 13, 2007 Share #5  Posted April 13, 2007 Bit disappointed that yours was the only comment.  Sorry William, I havent been over the the photo forum for a while, but I DO like this image, great composition. The photo is one of those "sigh, wish I was there right now" images.  The tonal range you have here I suspect may have been a challenge for digital. Glad you used film.  Best  Tim
pemayeux Posted April 16, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted April 16, 2007 Hi William - Don't know if the M8 could have held this tonal scale or not, either way it would have required a lot of postprocessing. Something I'm growing weary of...
lambroving Posted April 19, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted April 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Tim, Â Funny you should say that. Sent this shot to a number of people who were there with me and received comments like, "Yes, that's it! You got it! How did you manage that?!" I guess we know how... Â Paul, Â I'd imagine the detail in the white masonry would be blown. Am I right?
stunsworth Posted April 19, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted April 19, 2007 I'd imagine the detail in the white masonry would be blown. Am I right? Â Not in my experience with the M8. I think the reason that this shot has attracted more comments about the technicalities rather than the composition is that the steps in the foreground don't really add anything. I think it's a better shot with them removed. The colours are good as Imants says, but is that enough?

andybarton Posted April 19, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted April 19, 2007 I think William would be surprised by the tonal range of a DMR and the M8
pemayeux Posted April 19, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted April 19, 2007 I think William would be surprised by the tonal range of a DMR and the M8 Â I've seen some superb shots on this forum produced by the M8 and especially the DMR. They do show much more range than what I have seen from some of the big name competition. I've got the M8 and I am finding that to get what the camera has to offer you just about have to be a digital pro. Frankly at this point in time I am frustrated with digital capture and tired of fighting CS2 to get a decent print. I've never had that problem printing a scanned slide. Â Personally I don't think the shot is boring. I've been to this area and William has captured the colors and feel very nicely. I also think the steps do add in that they lead the eye toward the open area below. But it is all subjective. I've seen many boring shots, and after looking back I can say I've posted some, but I subscribe to idea that if you can't be critical in a constructive way, don't say anything at all. Guest stnami Posted April 19, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted April 19, 2007 It seems to me that there is an effort to make a poor image good by verbal jousting .............................................. follow the steps!
