miha Posted July 4, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted July 4, 2013 Hi Philip, unfortunately Erwin Puts say nothing about how Leica had to adapt to different sorts of glass as some was discontinued during the production years of the elmarit 24R. I wonder if there is perhaps a differnence in quality and this may be the reason why the price of the 24mm elmarit-R lenses varies so much (100%) in the second-hand market. wizard Posted July 5, 2013 Share #4 Posted July 5, 2013 If certain optical glasses are no longer available, any manufacturer will try to find similar glass that still suits the original optical computation. Maybe a slight fine tuning will be necessary to adapt the new glass, but that will not significantly alter the performance of a given optical computation. To the best of my knowledge, the basic computation of the R 24mm lens was never changed, so performance should be very equal over the years. My own sample is from the late 1970ies and performs very well. Price differences in used lenses are more likely due to overall appearance of a given lens. Mine looks well used on the outside, but the optics are pristine, and I bought it very cheap (some years ago though). Andy Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Plane of focus was sharp, outside the plane but within the the depth of field, only the center is sharp. Many others reported the same issue. I traded mine off for a 21 and 28. I find it insulting when people speak badly regarding this optic, when clearly it is their lack of SKILL that is on display. I have shot over 3000 frames with this lens and the clarity, sharpness & color far outshines anything from Canon & Nikon. Hands down, every time. Lack of skill does not make edges sharp when they should be within the depth of field and the centers are sharp at the same distance. This was a well reported problem 15/20 years ago. Otherwise they are all identical. I've sold all my leica R gear but kept the 24 Elmarit (and picked up a cheap R3 to mount it on). It is a favorite lens of mine. I have an extensive Nikon line, including the 24/2 Nikkor but the 28 Elmarit is one of my favorites. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
