symmetron Posted June 29, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted June 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) This week, I was out with my X1 and it began to rain. I protected the camera successfully, but "really" noticed those three little holes on the top plate located about 4 o'clock just outside of the shutter speed as a rain droplet was located next to the holes. No water entry. Â What is the purpose of those holes? I would think covering them with some black tape would be ok.

symmetron Posted June 29, 2013 Author Share #2 Â Posted June 29, 2013 I read some place that they might be the holes for the speaker, but I'm not so sure.
dkCambridgeshire Posted June 29, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted June 29, 2013 I read some place that they might be the holes for the speaker, but I'm not so sure. Â They are the for the camera's speaker through which you hear the 'beeps'. Â dunk
symmetron Posted June 29, 2013 Author Share #4 Â Posted June 29, 2013 I covered the holes with tape, but didn't notice any difference in the "beeping" level. I thought they might be performing some other function like internal pressure equalization when the lens extends and retracts, or some other less obvious function. dkCambridgeshire Posted June 29, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted June 29, 2013 I covered the holes with tape, but didn't notice any difference in the "beeping" level. I thought they might be performing some other function like internal pressure equalization when the lens extends and retracts, or some other less obvious function. Â Â They're definitely at the speaker site. I covered the three holes with a small piece of Blu Tack and the diminished 'beep' volume was very noticeable. Tape is not thick enough - sound will still vibrate through it. Blu Tack absorbs the sound. Â dunk
symmetron Posted June 29, 2013 Author Share #6 Â Posted June 29, 2013 I'll try it. Thanks. Â Biggest concern is getting H20 in there and wreaking havoc.

Thanks. Biggest concern is getting H20 in there and wreaking havoc.  Nobody else seems to have managed to do that. The holes are so small that a water droplet's surface tension might prevent it falling through - it would then just sit in the hole and maybe even form a seal until it evaporates or is shaken out - unless it was forced through. This could all be explained in terms of the simple kinetic theory  dunk
