misha Posted June 27, 2013 Share #1 Posted June 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I am finally in the process of upgrading from M8 to M9. I've noticed something strange with the m9 that i have a chance to buy: all images appear oversaturated and contrasty when viewed in camera, but appear fine (and great compared to m8) when transferred/viewed in my computer. is this normal? is there a secret LCD settings menu? p.s. i am only shooting DNGs. thanks misha main

JohannB Posted June 27, 2013 Share #2 Posted June 27, 2013 If you have a LCD preview you are shooting DNG&JPG. On preview you are viewing the JPG and pending on your import settings you most probably only viewing DNG on your computer. There is a menu setting to adjust JPG color: Menu > Color Saturation Johann
Tonki-M Posted June 27, 2013 Share #3 Posted June 27, 2013 no matter if you shoot raw only or raw+jpeg, the raw files will have a generated a jpeg preview of that raw. The jpeg generated is based on your jpeg settings in your camera, so it will have already been altered according to the jpeg engine in-camera. THIS has nothing to do with the raw file itself, so when you view the raw (DNG) in your computer, u will see the real raw and not jpeg generated preview. Paul J Posted June 27, 2013 Share #4 Posted June 27, 2013 The LCD is not it's strongest point...to put it diplomatically. I think you can adjust the LCD brightness but that is all. You get the feel of it after a while. I too had a bit of a shock the first time I used it! Even when exposed correctly the shadows can look blocked up but when you view on a computer those shadows are rich in detail and the colour natural as it should be. If you want to check for exposure look at the histogram. I've sort of forgotten/got used to how bad the LCD looks now and can get the picture with the histogram. Until you get a feel for it don't use it as a lighting proof.
Guest Duane Pandorf Posted June 27, 2013 Share #5 Posted June 27, 2013 Hi, I am finally in the process of upgrading from M8 to M9. To correctly see how the image is exposed you would change the defaults for the Histogram settings in the Main Menu. By selecting Over/underexposure in the Clipping setup you can see what's over/under exposed when previewing the image and after selecting the Info button to the left of the LCD. When shooting DNG's only, the Saturation and Contrast settings in the Main menu have no effect on the image that's previewed on the LCD. Those settings are only used by the camera to create the JPG in camera when you're shooting JPG only or DNG+JPG, whatever changes you've made to those settings will be reflected in the Preview on the LCD. Hope this helps.
