onceuponatime Posted June 26, 2013 Share #1 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Yesterday evening I went to a larger department store with a view to purchase Xvario. Photography department was in the basement, lighting low, similar to low light bar, low light restuarant. 1. 70mm f6.4 iso1600 1/30 Autofocus, customers moving around. Xvario locked focus fast enough every single time on customers and the photos were steady Non blurred. 2. Xvario size, handling and weight is more as Mini M than X & allows handheld steady at slow shutter speeds. 3. Manual focus is rather nice, smooth and nice resistance, better than manual focus on many focus by wire lenses eg FujiX, Olympus m4/3. Just a little turn to achieve focus, which is a magniifed box in the middle. This was in low light. Perhaps a firmware can include focus peaking. 4. The lens handling is nice. The glass whilst Leica, the manufacture is most as Panasonic. 5. Would have preffered aperture on the lens, with expsoure compensation dial on top instead of changing aperture on top dial and delving into menus for exp comp. This is an area Fuji Xpro1, XE1 are simpler in handling. 6. Live view works when shutter is slightly pressed, thus achieving correct exposure is easy. 7. Every time after I viewed the photos (I had taken) I lifted the Xvario to my eye to take a photo. This I did five times. This is the reason I will not purchase as the Xvario just wants to be lifted to the eye thus feels incomplete. It just felt not right shooting a Mini M at arms length. I realise in the future better EVFs can be put on top of the XVario, nevertheless a built in EVF in place of flash would have made Xvario complete. (Would have made Xvario the Digilux2 of this decade). Overall if a person is not concerned about not having built in EVF, not concerned about shallow dof, Xvario is a fine, Fine digital camera. Fotograph Posted June 26, 2013 Share #2 Posted June 26, 2013 ...... a built in EVF in place of flash would have made Xvario complete. My opinion too - maybe X2-Vario?
dkCambridgeshire Posted June 26, 2013 Share #3 Posted June 26, 2013 (edited) A built-in EVF would be built-in obsolescence. No need to delve into 'Menus' for exp. comp. as it's on the 'Direction Pad' - beautifully ergonomic thumb action and couldn't be simpler. No need to have a manual aperture ring 'on lens' with a fixed lens. Panasonic lens Shallow depth of field would require a much bigger Panasonic :p lens. The X Vario will especially appeal to existing X1 and X2 users who already appreciate the X series' intuitive operation and ergonomics. dunk Edited June 26, 2013 by dkpeterborough

I'm an existing X1 user who really appreciates the X series intuitive operation and ergonomics and today I went to the Leica store to have a look at the X Vario and play with it. Whilst the operation is mostly the same the handling isn't. The X Vario camera / lens combination is very differently weighted due to the relatively heavy lens and you will be using both hands to operate the X Vario a lot of the time to handle the zoom. But the main difference is the size of the X Vario. The X1 can be carried in the pocket of a jacket and be with you at all times. The X Vario is just too big for that - and too heavy. In this respect its more like the M than the X1 . Don't get me wrong - having tried the X Vario I think its a very nice camera and it certainly will find a market. Its more 'Leica' than I thought and the picture quality is pretty impressive. I for one just can't find a reason to buy one but I hope many others will
HV25 Posted June 26, 2013 Share #5 Posted June 26, 2013 Every time after I viewed the photos (I had taken) I lifted the Xvario to my eye to take a photo. This I did five times. Funny enough I did that too despite using an X1 for a number of years which never did me do that. Perhaps its like many things just something to get used to. Thus for me not having a built in evf in Xvario is not meeting the high expectation i have of Leica.

The X Vario isn't competitive with those other brands. None of the 'X' cameras have a VF built in.
