Have M240 - sell my M9 and buy a Fuji X-E1?

I'm in the process of selling my M8 on eBay right now and I have had what strikes even me as an appalling thought in the last couple of days. During a recent trip using the M and M9 I often found myself regretting not having a zoom lens with me.

I've been mulling over whether it would be a good idea use the M along with a Fujifilm X-E1 with a XR 18-55mm F2.8-4 lens an Fuji's M adapter. That means I would sell my M9 which I like very much but it would give me a lighter and more flexible solution without having to rely on the smaller sensor of a D-Lux, and keeping use of my M lenses (though at a modified focal length).

Any thoughts on on whether this is a good or bad idea? I was waiting to see what Leica had to announce earlier this week. In itself I kind of agree with Jono Slack that X-Vario is a good solution for some people but it's not what I think I need.

Any comments appreciated.

have tried the Xe and it is a great camera but I didn't like the EVF especially in low light as everything gets very jerky. Personally I would keep the M9. I work with 2 bodies with a 50 on one and 28 on the other and will only switch to a longer lens if doing portraits. So If you shoot mostly with a 50 and a wider lens I would have thought you would be better off sticking with the M9

Why not just use a zoom on your M240 if you really want one?

Yes, thought of that too but I'm not sure when that R adapter will be available. But I should explore that option more I guess.

interesting point though I suppose the M9 and a FF leica zoom would be a lot bigger and heavier

Yes it would, and though it would mean carrying one less body, it would need me to change lenses more often.

I like to think I use a wider range but I find most of my shooting is done on a 35mm and 90mm with a 24mm used from time to time. My last time I also had a WATE lens but found I didn't use more than 21mm for the most part and could easily have left it home. Maybe _that's_ something I should sell!

However I did find myself missing a zoom for more specify framing or to quickly take a candid portrait only to find I was too close for 90mm and shuffling back was distracting for the subject.

There are plenty of examples of people shooting M240s with R lenses using Novoflex and other adapters. The addition of one lens and adapter is certainly a less complicated solution that buying and carrying an entirely different camera system.

sounds like the Xe1 could be a good idea then but I personally wouldn't sell my M9 for it. I bought T X20 a while ago which is a fantastic little camera (as long as you shoot RAW) it obviously doesn't have the IQ or the shallow DOF of the the M or even the Xe1 but is very capable and jacket pocketable, mine goes everywhere with me

I have a X2 accompanying my M240 and really like it. The menu and button are nearly identical. So switching between cameras is fairly easy and you do not need to rethink.

You mean a Leica X2? The whole point of my exercise though was to use a zoom lens. An X-Vario may serve the same purpose but an X-E1 with an M adapter would have more flexibility at lower cost and a faster zoom lens.

As I write that though it strikes me that the X Vario is not an irrational option. If it's image quality is good enough at ISO 3200 or so it may suit my needs.

It was interesting to read Jono Slack's comment

>>When I first received the camera, ... underwhelmed by the slow zoom. I couldn’t see why anyone would want it over an OMD with a Panasonic 12-35 lens, or a Fuji X-E1 with the 18-55 zoom. ...

However, over the months I’ve rather fallen in love with the simplicity of the X Vario - the logic of the controls is hard to fault, the image quality is really excellent and the fact of it being a simple one-stop package is really compelling. <<

I find with my M that I leave the R 28-90 nearly all day at times, depending on the venue of course. I use the Novoflex LEM/LER adapter with no remorse. Why wait for Leica to come out with their M-R adapter sometime (?) this year.

Rent to see if that will suit instead of getting into a whole other camera system.

The R 21-35 is also small and quite useful in street work. Also the R 80-200 is a very sharp lens. With those three you are covered from 21-200 not to mention the APO 1.4 extender or APO 2.0 and it's all Leica glass.

Thank you for that! Some things seem so obvious you wonder why you didn't think of them. I just called a Novoflex dealer and he has one adapter left which he will hold for me. I think it's at least worth a try before I plunge for substantially more money :-|

So which is the first R lens you are going to try?

In a previous life I had a Leica R (forget which, but Pre-R8) and a friend who bought it from me will gladly loan the 28-90 back. So it's worth a go.

Oh yes.

Just remember you must hit the #3 button on the front to get focus peaking going each and every time. Also if you are previewing a previous shot you must half press the shutter to get into new image mode if you want to refocus with #3 button.

Thank you for the encouragement :-(

Well it's a low cost trial and worth a go. OK, I must go and pick up that adapter before they close (I'm in Singapore)...

There are a ton of other older lens mount adapters to M that you could try out - maybe check out something like the Fotodiox Nikon F to LM? Lots of cheap reasonable glass for that floating around.

Those old zooms aren't too big either.

I assume you mean the Fujifilm X20? I just looked through DP Review's review of the camera. It does look impressive.

yes that's right the fuji X20. fun little camera with good controls and lightning fast AF. I wouldn't recommend it for landscape work but a great street camera
