An open letter to Leica:

"Re: Leica Products - Specifically Leica X Vario

Today is June 11, 2013 and I am still awaiting your newsletter announcing a new "Mini-M", whatever that is. I am the happy owner and professional, yes, professional user of an X1 which I bought used. I am quite happy with my M3, my IIIF, my R4 and every lens. So, I am not in the market for a new camera. However, after reading the marketing of a "Micro-M" (quite silly, but...), I was initially interested, even though I can only afford a used X1 and am not likely to afford any new Leica product in this lifetime due to my wife's health issues with a stroke and multiple surgeries. I look forward to the day that I may be able to buy a used M9 for my documentary work.

In case you have not noticed, forums like this one and many others are full of vitriol about anything Leica-related. I do not understand these people...While I don't understand some Leica products, like the Panasonic clones, it is not of interest to me and I fully trust that Leica knows what Leica does and needs to do in the future. But you will not receive any vitriol from me.

I wonder, though, if the critical gear geeks on these forums should be your marketing guys...??? It seems that they know better than Leica. Just ask them, they will gladly tell you. And while asking, how about asking them to invest/risk their own money in the products they suggest?

Yes, this is a tongue-in-cheek "letter". I, for one, am quite happy with Leica products and will buy only the ones that fit my needs and desires. The new X Vario is not one of them but I trust it will be for many buyers worldwide.

Congratulations on a new, and hopefully, successful product! I look forward to the continuing product line of Leica cameras and lenses.

Best regards,"

In case you have not noticed forums like this one are full of praise for superior products, which is best demonstrated by the extensive inventories of Leica lenses and bodies that many here possess.

Oh, Go Yellow Jackets!!! (my daughter is an alum).

Agreed. It's passion, simple as that. Leica benefits from the passion for it's brand, and suffers when the same crowd think they've goofed. Passion comes from suffer, hurt, endure - it's a negative root to a positive word. If you're looking for positivity, you'll surprisingly find it in many places, including negative ones!

An uninterested "Meh, didn't know they released a new camera?" would be even worse imo.

Nice to meet you, Stephen! When did your daughter graduate? As an alum myself, I taught a number of years and thoroughly enjoyed the experience until health problems forced me to stop teaching and become a caregiver.

Hope to discuss all things Leica with you in the near future...

Best wishes from a "Nervous Wreck from Georgia Tech"!:D
