So, there are some positive and some negative opinions here.

If I have a look at e.g. the pic from the egs, and zoom it on my 27" iMac screen, its looks quite impressive!.

I have an Sony RX100 with most likely the mentioned 16MP APS-C sensor but when I zoom my sony pics, I cannot get that Paula quality.

Maybe it could still be a FF sensor with 24 MP, and Leica is fooling us around!

I would not be surprised next tuesday if it turns out that the specs are different compared to the ones that were mentioned here!:D:D

John

The Sony RX100 uses a 20mp, 1" sensor that is still quite a bit smaller than aps-c:

If they'd just told us her name was Paula in the first place, we could have skipped the whole controversy about what was entitled to be called a 'Mini M'!

Kirk

HI There Kirk

I've been referring to her as Paula since Christmas, and I'm damned if I'm even going to allow the word you use past my lips! Everybody knows exactly what it means . . . to them!

my 2 ct:

it will be interesting to see how Paula will perform against the Sony RX100 that has probably the same sensor......, but at 1/5th of the price, and really pocket format.

The RX100 is my second camera when I need some zoom and video and pocket size, but normally I will be on the road with an M8:D

HI John, Douglas

Thank you Douglas - I was about to say that.

MP is really not the measure of the quality of the picture...so hopfully we will have something interesting to look forward to?

I'm not sure I understand your question. I was simply pointing out to John the specs of his RX100's sensor.

Either way, if I were a betting man, I'd bet that this new Leica has a Sony 16mp, aps-c sensor, which is a very good performer, and it is the base silicon for many good cameras on the market.

Also I hope for a well implemented 16mp sensor but it need to take M lenses.

I just ment that also a bit lower number of MP can be just right - if the implementation is done well.

All the best / Erik

If it's 16MP and APS-C my money will be going to an RX1. I like my MM, but it isn't an everyday camera (nor is the M9 unless you're a photojournalist). I want a FF Leica that I can throw in a backpack.

. . . erm . . . M(240) - It's only slightly bigger than the RX1 and you can also change lenses . . . I can't imagine a backback it won't fit in!

The RX-100 does not have an APS-C sensor. It is a 1" sensor. It will not match the performance of an APSC sensor. :D

Sorry responded before I saw the other posts.

If this is the Mini M it might have a CMOSIS MINI sensor ...as distinct from the M 240's CMOSIS MAX sensor ... We should be aware of all possibilities ... and also take into account the gestation period for the new MINI M ie consider which sensor might have been available for it X months ago when the camera was proposed.

dunk

That might be the saving grace of this camera. If Leica has developed a cropped version of the M sensor (with CMOSIS), it might portend better things for the future.

The lack of imagination in this X-Vario is numbing, I'd have to say.

The RX100 has a 1/1.7" sensor, which is close to 0.6"

Hi There

No - the RX100 has a 1" sensor - 13.2mm x 8.8 mm - area 116 sq mm

a 1/1.7 sensor is much much smaller - 7.4mm x 5.58mm 41 sq mm

APS-C (fwiw) is 23.7 x 15.7 372 sq mm

We'll see what entitles the new camera to be called an M - unlikely to be a rangefinder, maybe compatibility with M lenses, maybe nothing at all.

I certainly hope the new camera is more than a warmed-over X2 and if the CMOSIS relationship is yielding the expected benefits, I would have expected it to have a CMOSIS sensor. It would be surprising to find another sensor in there.

Jono, you just give away SO much in your photos... You should be ashamed. I'm sure Leica is going to smite you for violating your NDA. It's obvious from the look that hen is giving you that the new textured body covering is either chicken feathers or chicken feed.

Wow. An organic, biodegradable Leica. What will they think of next? :D

I'm thinking it's the same sensor used in the X2.

M now stands for Marketing. It's obviously an X camera. I'm sure someone in their marketing department thought to call it a mini M because it looks like one, then because the X2 is even smaller, why not call that one a micro M, and so on. If they really think a D-LUX 6 is M quality in your pocket then, well...

Like it or not, the Leica is heavy. It doesn't work well with my messenger bag. I'd like something smaller and lighter, an interchangeable lens isn't as important to me.
