L1-killer?

Just remember, it was not that long ago where we saw some Canon 1DS-MKII users with the full frame 16MP sensor using Leica R-glass openly admit (and produced samples of photographic proof) on the previous Leica forum and the fredmiranda forum that the smaller (in size and pixels) DMR 10MP pixel was better.

I'm not saying this is the case of the DSC-R1 versus L1, ...yet. I will reserve my judgement until I've seen the sample images from both, and no doubt A-B comparisons by some re-known sensor 'hunters'.

But for now, being anti-Sony from past poor experiences, I must admit the DSC-R1 as a product has a good looking set of specifications and it visually looks so much better than their newly announced Sonoltica (Sony-Minolta-Konica) DSLR.

I have no doubt that the DSC-R1 will follow in the steps as the D2 as one of the all-time collectables

Could I quote form DPReview an all time Sony favorite:

So here we come up to the issues. Firstly the DSC-R1's ISO 800 and 1600 aren't as good as the Canon (forget ISO 3200). When we first received the R1 we had hoped it would at least be a match but unfortunately it's not. At ISO 800 images are perfectly usable but you'll be aware that some detail will be 'smudged' by the high ISO NR system. At ISO 1600 you could face some fairly noticeable chroma mottle noise in shadows, something you just won't get from the Canon.

The second issue is image processing, take a RAW out of the DSC-R1 and run it through Adobe Camera RAW and you can see just what that lens / sensor combination is capable of, however you really need to be pretty dedicated to shoot RAW all the time, 20 MB per RAW file and around 9 seconds to write; I did note that some of our forums users are converting the Sony RAW files to Adobe DNG to save space. That's not to say JPEG's aren't good, they are very good, but you get a whole new appreciation for just how much crisper images could look converting in ACR.

And it is but ugly to boot!

Cheers,

Tim

Yeah, Sean, if you've got an M8, couldn't you come up with a few circumlocutions for us, like, "The R1 has decent DR but other pending products show a DR closer to 5..." You wouldn't have to SAY what it is...

The Sony, from what I've read, strikes me as a good snapshot camera.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think "Nebuchadnezzar" when he or she sees the new title many of us have here? <G>

Tim,

Phil and I tend to take somewhat different approaches to looking at cameras. I'll reserve judgement on the R-1 until I've tested it.

Regarding the other camera...while I've read the rumors that I'm testing an M8, I myself have never said that. But, speaking generally, when one tests or gets information about anything under an NDA, it's very important for him to respect that entirely. So, I respect that with all of the manufacturers. To be sure, when I have information about cameras or lenses (that Leica allows me to share), I'll mention it.

Cheers,

Sean
