M8 ion the Old Vegas strip shots on Flickr

Hi--

I put a set of shots from "old" Vegas at night here:

Las Vegas downtown - a photoset on Flickr

Here's the scoop on them...

First, none had a filter on them.

Second, it was late, I was tired, and had a bit too much to drink that night, so there are a couple that aren't tack sharp. Most were hyperfocused and shot from the hip--even with the 75 near wide open (!!). The portraits of the two guys were taken--they were hammered, and it was the one guys birthday.

Third, the light was actually *red* a lot of the time from the funky overhead ceiling they have over the strip at Fremont, and of course, all the neon bouncing around--this is NOT IR or magenta-ish stuff.

Finally, all of these are shots taken directly from C1, with the exception of Glitter Gulch Girls--which was colour balanced in Photoshop. I haven't had time to do any more work, so these are quick quick quick!

But I had a blast that evening; I was with two other photographers from Canada, and apart from me being too naive about the dangers of Vegas off the strip at 3:00 AM, all went well!

The M8 was a joy to use.

Hope you enjoy them.

What happened at 3am? I was in the Fremont area a few weeks ago (had a bus to catch from the Greyhound station sometime after midnight) and it didn't seem too dodgy.

Great job, Jamie. I especially like the low perspectives on a couple of the shots near the beginning. Made me feel like I was just there last week. ;)

$.99 deep fried twinkies ... it doesn't get more Americana than that.

Actually, by 3 AM the strip itself was mostly deserted except for the occasional gambler stumbling out to drink some more before spending more money.

But to make a long story short, we got caught just *off* the strip a little north of Fremont at 3 AM. There was some great light there and some from the strip too. So we were messing around when out of the blue (really) came a couple of Harleys... blue with blue detailing and LEDs.

My photog. friends were using Very Expensive Looking Nikons with long zooms, and one of them actually got a fabulous shot of this guy--Hell's Angel if his badges were anything to by, with relatively recent knife-like wounds on his shaved head--when we realised we were slowly being surrounded by other guys dressed in red.

Ok, so part of my brain is thinking "wow, neon light, blue chopper and rider and guys with red bandanas--these photos will rock" but my instinctive side had already shut down all my equipment (fortunately with the M8 that's not hard to do).

I was just getting ready to go when the other photogs grabbed me where I was and said "walk--don't look back" and so I did. Fortunately, we weren't that far off the strip and there was a cop on a bike there, so we got there quickly and left.

Interesting, anyway! But I'm glad that the M8 looks like it does!
