albertknappmd Posted April 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got my M8 yesterday and have been testing it out with great interest and care. It is phenomenal and very intuitively designed. Similar im most respects to the DMR but obviously better electronics... Two questions for all: 1. I noticed that the M8 after the shutter is releases makes a dull whirring noise lasting a second or two. is this normal? Certainly not as quiet as my M6 or 7... 2. I noticed that when you just select for DNG, that the color management on the menu that I ahd set for Adobe 1998 can no longer be opened. I assume that this is because DNG like RAW does not operate in Adobe RGB, sRGB or prophoto RGB etc... Or, am I missing something?
Advertisement Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Hi albertknappmd, Take a look here noisy M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest sirvine Posted April 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2007 1. This is normal. The shutter is reset by a motor. 2. Also normal. Someone better versed in color management can explain why this is the case.
stunsworth Posted April 4, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 4, 2007 Everything normal Albert. Colourspace is selected at the point of RAW conversion. Enjoy the camera :-)
Jamie Roberts Posted April 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 4, 2007 Albert--have someone from 10 ft away trigger the M8 shutter. You only hear the reset if you're very, very close. Otherwise, all you hear is the "click" and while it's not as silent as the film Ms, it's much faster RAW files have no colour space except the camera native RGB. This is why I like to use a selectable input profile to map the way the camera sees stuff in RAW to what I want to see. When the camera processes the RAW data, you have a choice of which colour space it uses to write out the information.
albertknappmd Posted April 4, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted April 4, 2007 Thank you for the informative and prompt replies.... Glad all is well so far but you can understand how one can become neurotic hanging around this forum and reading all the horror stories.... BTw, my firmware is 1.09 and I will probably wait until 1.1 comes out before changing.
scjohn Posted April 4, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 4, 2007 Albert I agree with everything everyone else has written except to say that the "whirring sound" doesn't last for a second or two. It is the motor as everyone else said but it runs for less than a second.
