A miller Posted August 10, 2016 Share #19641 Posted August 10, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking for some guidance on shooting the Perseid Meteor shower. I was able to make a nice capture on my D810 last year at 20sec, ISO800 at f4. I'm going back to the same location and expect the same skies and light conditions. Where would you shoot/expose Tri-X and T-Max400 given the above exposure settings. Also, can I reasonably calibrate to a digital 35mm test shot and a lens of equivalent focal length? Thanks! Marc - i am not an astrophotographer buy just the sound of what you are proposing to do suggest to me that tri x is not the right film. it has very bad reciprocity failure characteristics and I fear that you will get very very high contrast with your results

Doc Henry Posted August 10, 2016 Author Share #19642 Posted August 10, 2016 (edited) Yes, my prices were in $CAN. I have bought a lot of film from B&H, but after shipping and customs duty it isn't cheap. Now I buy from within Canada if possible. Talking of vinyl, I drove two weeks ago to the south shore of Nova Scotia for the last four boxes of classical LP's that a surgical colleague had left behind when he died. They will all, slowly, be cleaned on the Loricraft, placed in new sleeves and played. It's a strange thing to be handed someone else's collection of music, and a very good way of discovering new things. I do hope my cartridge/pickup outlasts me as I shall never afford to replace it! Chris Chris ,to reply you , I had some interesting conversation with John Ikarus here , please take a look You will not regret to go and get the records because your friend is a connoisseur. For a cartridge if you like jazz and classical music faithfully reproduced, take a Moving coil (MC) better for sound but it needs a pre-pre amplifier (low signal). Denon DL103 is cheap and is one of the best MC in the world still in production not as Fuji or if you like a same cartridge as John (Ortofon Moving Magnet-MM) do not need pre-pre amplifier. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/ http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/?p=3015977 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/?p=3027031 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/?p=3028253 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/?p=3028817 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/?p=3030895 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/?p=3031388 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258680-turntable-recommendations/?p=3033564 People now can make any diffrence between a "digital and agressive" image and a "faithful soft" image The same thing in music with an agressive MP3 sound , hard to listen versus a soft and well defined clear and non-agressive note , through vinyl and by example tubes amplifier , as "almost" in concert . So goes the world, but people will see when their ears will be deaf , but it's too late The same remark for "synthetic" digital and "aggressive" images which interest us here , they get tired by dint of seeing. "Hi Fi image and Hi-fi sound" : same fight Vinyl and film are not dead ! gbealnz Posted August 10, 2016 Share #19645 Posted August 10, 2016 Looking for some guidance on shooting the Perseid Meteor shower. Thanks! Marc, I have shot a bit at night. OK, I've shot a lot at night. While Adam makes a case for reciprocity, I always used as fast a film as I could, back in the day. Now, I would only suggest digital I am sorry. My suggestion would be the D810 and shoot as many as you can be bothered, before, during, and after the expected timing for the show. Something like a 14mm lens, the Nikkor 14-24, or similar, something wide, and fast, so wide open. The meteors will appear as streaks, but they should all come back to a common radiant. If you have the burning desire to use film, stack the D810 on top, or alongside the film camera you select. Again I'd use something like the 14mm (for full frame). It gives some wriggle room for centering, and allows a slightly longer exposure to be used, without showing trailing. Good luck. Gary

I think Leica's mistake (based on the current sales prices relative to the original retail price) was perhaps putting a 50mm lens rather than a infinitely easier to focus (for shots other than infinity) 28mm summaron. How is the rangefinder on the lens? Does it provide a distance scale according to each aperture like other Leica lenses? It looks like a really cool camera. Have fun with it.

Marc for astrophotography of stars or moon I have made some tests with Kodak Portra 400 push at 800 and TX400, the results are good I'll get some pictures and I'll post. 400 Isos is the minimum IMO A tripod is essential with long exposures+ a timed trigger would also be advisable or you can leave the shutter open (option B on cam) if you like stars trails Best Henry

christoph_d Posted August 10, 2016 Share #19658 Posted August 10, 2016 ... Interesting, Christoph. Adam, With the Leica-0 Leica really produced a replica of one of the original ur-leicas, the main differences being a housing a few mm higher to accommodate modern 35mm film rolls, and a lens which is coated (it still can flare quite a bit though). The 28mm summaron lens was designed something like 35 years later, and adding it to this body would be practical but quite out of style. There is no rangefinder on the camera, one has to guess. The finder used on the year 2000 replica is so bad that it never made it into mass production even in the 20ies! (the 2004 replica has a finder similar to that of the Leica I model A) There is a distance scale for focusing the lens, though no depth of field indication. Working with apertures limited from 3.5 to 12 can be challenging. Not forgetting to cap the lens before film transport as well (there is no self-capping shutter). And also having to change the shutter times somewhere in the middle of winding the film on is something to get used to. It is a real cool camera, I'm having a lot of fun with it, and it does take quite sharp pictures (the above one is un-sharpened by the glass). Welcome, dear visitor!
