Gary, I think the color conversion to b&w is more flexible for the film compare than for digital. There is more flexibility to correct if necessary but there is a loss of nuance anyway

Yesterday I make tests of FujiXpro1 versus Leica M8

Why Fuji because:

-1 - Their sensor (Fuji XTrans - no moire-no low-pass filter) is very close to the film (like Velvia color and Acros b&w)

-2 - Fuji also makes a ring for optical M , with electrical contacts (therefore transmitting the information to the camera)

The results are really good. Pictures of XPro really like the film !

When I get round to it I am going to start putting some B&W shots taken with the X100 onto my flickr account (only signed up yesterday). With the orange filter emulation selected and variable amounts of -ve exposure compensation the results out of the camera are really fantastic. There are some good examples on flickr actually, but its a bit to clean and harsh on the edges compared to film. The M8 is better in that regard but I liked the tonality out of the X100 better, Fuji really nailed their film emulations but oddly I think the velvia preset is the worst one they did but its the one everyone gravitates towards. The Astia preset is really beautiful IMHO.

When I get round to it I will load up the film shots I took over Christmas with XP2, Porta 400 and AgfaVista 200. I really liked being able to increase the saturation a touch on the Portra scans, gives two possible results in one film.

Hi NJH,

Agree with your opinion.

I especially like the monochrome Xpro1 , particularly successful (with a camera that costs less than the MM) ,

but with a "smooth" picture, something I search for a long time, one backup camera that looks like film !

Best

Henry, thanks for posting. When looking for a digital backup for my film Leica's I did consider to get an X-E1 or 2. The output of the camera looks more than good. The thing that put me off is the feel of the camera in terms of build quality and having to invest in yet another set off lenses. Absolutely love the M8.2 in daylight, although I'd never give up film for it. Shot a couple of photos on the beach yesterday with the Leica MP and a 35mm Summicron IV.

From the moment I grab that camera out of the bag, I'm instantly happy. I guess that helps me taking better pictures, somehow. Nothing beats film. :)

Tooka, M8 or M8.2 is one of the best camera for converting color to b&w (i think better than M9) with smooth pictures .

It costs less than the MM now in second hand market.

Furthermore, the conception of the Fuji X Trans sensor in XPro1 (like Foveon sensor in DP Merril) plays an important role

in the results.

Thanks Kanz for posting , very nice colors , the Portra 400 one of my favorite film

Thanks. I scan a linear TIF in VueScan and convert to positive with ColorPerfect. That does give great color with superb control over the process.

Even odd film like Ferrania Solaris yields nice colors that way:
