Well if you don't manage to find more Extrafilm I'm certain you'll be able to use Vista equally well. Wonderful reds. And look at how the wet street surface has been rendered. Just yummy.

Thanks, Philip. Funnily, Vista seems to be vanishing too... at least from the Berlin (online) store. Kodak next, I was thinking, expensive as they are. Now I see they are in the news for some shady practice, not sure how the recent turmoil about insider trading etc. is going to affect their colour film though.

Anyway, for the moment I'll just fire away with what cartridges I have.

I was of the understanding that the manufacturer of Kodak film is not really a part of Kodak Corp.. The are licensed to produce the film under Kodak name......I could be wrong.

Best,

You're right, Wayne. The film manufacturer is probably now called Kodak Alaris. Corporate juggling remains a mystery to me. 🙂

Beautiful, Phil.

A practical question: the green filter is probably my least used filter: what's the situation you use it ?   Red sky ? Sun set ? any other ? I tried to find out and read the manufacturers advice: to enhance the separation of green shades ...... ?

Cichorium intybus-the humble chicory performs a great spectacle every morning. While yesterdays blossoms  have withered, hundreds of new blossoms appear, only to fold at about noon.... I love this plant particularly because of the heavenly color of the blooms.

Thank you very much Klaus. There is of course a longer answer to the question of why use the green filter, which involves the red of the sky at sunset, but I really just used it because I have one which is the same make and thread of the lens and I felt like experimenting with it that evening to see what would happen. I found that it partially balanced the brightness of the evening sky by darkening the reddish tones while leaving the shadows quite open. Next time I might take an orange or yellow filter and see what difference it might make (I acquired a job-lot of 3 ancient Canon 48mm filters).

Pritam, you do realise that asking people to ask not is going to cause everyone to ask: how DID you keep yourself out of the frame? The structure itself is interesting - encouragement for selfies? Would have thought that was something not requiring too much further encouragement (dissuasion would be my preference). And it is behind a fence? I guess if not some enlightened citizen might roll it into the Yarra. THAT would make an interesting sight, the chrome ball bobbing down the river. Not that I’d ever encourage that sort of behaviour 😏

Sometimes I ask myself, why do I react to this or that picture? a very simple approach is to look at the system that reacts: guts or brains ? This pictures clearly belongs to the visceral category... Ouch  !   Well spotted, Rog.

Oh, “visceral“ I like; it cuts right to the heart of the matter. Where would we be without metaphors? Surely in this instance, I would be hard-pressed to stitch together a visual idea that started with an extermination tent. I had to move at a fast clip, but it was still a gas. I held my breath, to say the least. I didn’t want to be mistaken for a termite, however oversized, lest my fate be to term out.

Green filter for portraits, too, in black and white.

Such stagecraft, Phil, take eight curtain calls for Anton Chekhov. As an abstract, two rectangular color fields (translating in my mind) and the intrusion of a diagonal at the bottom. Coincidentally, I have been working on a somewhat stubborn photo-collage with precisely those elements, inspired by Richard Diebenkorn‘s Ocean Park Series. I will post it after I pull it out of the oven, and it cools for a while. It remains to be seen whether it will be palatable or not.

Thank you Rog, as always, for your perception. I don't think there would be any doubt that the collage you mention will not only be palatable but a feast.

The thing about this photo was that it was the next-to-last shot on the roll. I blew the last shot on something uninteresting and then the, like, "best picture ever" came together in front of my eyes - multiple elements merging, Cartier-Bresson-like, into a beautifully orchestrated whole. Was I carrying that spare roll that should have been part of the gear that evening? The answer, as a wise man once said, is blowing in the wind.

Charles, this photograph has really stayed with me. The shapes and tones, those direct gazes, the dark of the hair against the light of the skin... even that area of negative space, which at first concerned me a little, has come to be part of the narrative I see in this picture. Just simply a wonderful photograph, and please tell me you've made a print of it.

I'm with James, this one is has a very strong composition, and nicely ties in with the whole idea (it seems to me) that Jesus on the cross is virtually always placed higher up to make us feeble die-once people have to look up in awe. Quite the inverse of Napoleon's tomb being placed below ground level to require everyone to bow to see it/him.

Shifted or not I really like this palette. Yesterday on the beach near our house the sky became a deep blue-purple, it looked unreal actually. Then came the torrential rain that had been promised the last three days.
