Sitting outside a small beach-side bar in Spain in the autumn, enjoying a cold beer when this couple plus camera-laden photographer appeared.  Had my MP, 35mm Summaron f2.8 & Portra 400 to hand, so just had to grab a quick shot.

So admire this asymmetrical composition, Phil. All of the lines lead back to the upper left-hand rectangle with man’s best friend. It reminds us that for graphic designers, the upper left corner of any composition is generally regarded as a priority, since in Western culture, we read the page starting from the top left. I know this is true for window display design, but I wonder what the general guidelines are for eastern culture compositions, reading top to bottom or right to left.  I was watching Eggleston on a YouTube video walking around with what looked like his Leica, snapping three quick shots around a building.  He showed no hesitation, no deliberation, simply saw what he wanted and snapped it in one blink.  He didn’t ponder composition for a moment but obviously knew when it was “right.“  Editing the reality of physical space through the lens of creativity.  I think it is in the DNA of photographers developing this awareness.

Thank you so very much Rog - interesting cultural notes such as these certainly add to my understanding of composition, even my own. I remember seeing the lovely little puppy and rapidly assessing composition options as I wanted to get his pose with paw in the air. This was the intuitive result which I am generally quite happy with - thank you for helping me understand why.

Also a loud and hearty shout out to you for your recommendation of "Self-Exposure", Ralph Gibson's autobiographical work. I received it for Christmas and have barely put it down - so many fascinating insights into the life and times, not the least being his encounters and relationships with other artists - among them many musicians and photographers. Beautifully presented, sumptuously illustrated - it is a delight.

I have a small book of Eggleeston's work on horses and dogs, and in it he describes his working technique exactly as you have described it from the video. His pictures certainly belie the apparent randomness/casualness of his encounters. It is certainly an awareness to have the ambition to develop in oneself.

I'm not sure about this picture - its appeal revealed itself to me mainly when I went quite close in while editing - not sure if it will translate to a smaller jpeg. Anyway, here it is:
