A miller Posted June 11, 2015 Share #5001 Posted June 11, 2015 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) The M5 has a spotmeter and I was metering at the cabin door, that was red and not black if I remember correctly. If you also notice the shadow I also had the sun in front of me and it was almost sunset, plus I still have to find a yellow filter of the correct size for the Summicron! I have two soviet Y2 filters but they are 40,5mm...another shot of the day: That's what I thought. When you spot meter on an object that is supposed to be much darker than middle gray and don't make any adjustments to account for this, the object will in fact come out middle gray. This is not a problem at all, and even a correct "expose for the shadows" workflow provided that you take the next step and "dodge and burn" the image to calm down the highlights and re-darken the dark tones to get everything in the right zones to achieve the effect you want. Another approach would have been to meter on an object that in fact is the same tone as middle gray, such as possibly the cement on the bottom right corner (hard to tell w/o being there), and use that exposure. Another approach would be to spot meter on the highlight and then spot meter on the darkest shadow that you want to have visible detail and then average the two readings and use that exposure. I think it all depends on how much PP (either digital or manual in a darkroom) you want to do. I might have taken your "expose for the shadows" approach but possibly stopped down just a bit to achieve a darker starting point for the dark tones. And I don't think the red filter does anything positive for you here. Edited June 11, 2015 by A miller
Advertisement Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Hi A miller, Take a look here I like film...(open thread). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Cuthbert Posted June 11, 2015 Share #5002 Posted June 11, 2015 The point is that the Neopan is also a very contrasty film and if you meter for the darker area of your picture as I am used to do you might find out a big difference between highlights and shadows, bigger than a normal film. In my experience a yellow filter helps to make a picture more "gradual" and in other occasions I didn't have this problem, that was my first roll of Neopan in the M5. Here for instance: Neopan works just great (I think).

You shoudl acknowledge this and try to improve rather than make excuses. A miller Posted June 12, 2015 Share #5004 Posted June 12, 2015 I've been playing around with my old Linhof Technika Press medium format camera and sublime Carl Zeiss lenses. I posted a few examples of some random street portraits that I took last week with Portra 400 with the 100mm (~50mm in 35mm format) shot wide open at f2.8. Here is the link in case anyone is interested... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/196764-favourite-medium-format/page-11 best, Adam

Doc Henry Posted June 12, 2015 Author Share #5006 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Thank you gentlemen to post such beautiful pictures As you know, since several days I develop b&w in my lab home . It tooks almost all night to develop..... what a pleasure to frame as you want, enlarge on a face you love.I noticed that some pictures (mountain landscapes) on photographic paper (gloss Ilford) are prettier than on a scanner. I also bought a dry "dish warmer" Kaiser brand (adjustable from 20 ° to 45 ° C) better than my heating bath with water (I had before) that I put everywhere . I heat a pan and I can develop my color films C41 myself. No more scratching and it's cheaper ! I intend develop at 37 °C with Tetenal ! http://shop.silverprint.co.uk/Kaiser-Dish-Warmer-12x16-Inch-4141/product/80355/K4141/ My model is 24x30 cms , reference 4140 Best Henry Edited June 12, 2015 by Doc Henry

LeicaBraz Posted June 12, 2015 Share #5017 Posted June 12, 2015 Cuthbert, agree with Miller that your pictures look overexposed, including that last one; and again most probably due to the spot meter of your M5. Not the guitar ones.
