It's so simple there isn't an awful lot to like or dislike. It's well made and it works. The results all come down to the lenses, and I only have three that will cover the image circle for 10x8, and all are portrait length. I can carry it in a large backpack for short distances, and the tripod for it is also big and heavy. I'm finding that I'm settling on paper negatives with artificial light for portraits (and the Galaxy Hyperspeed is a boon for this - no one can sit still while ISO 3 Ilford MG paper exposes, which often takes several flashes and some time at ambient light) and sometimes HP5+ which I can rate at 640 for development in Diafine.

Mostly I prefer the paper negatives; I can expose a pair, disappear into the dark and tray develop them under a safelight and emerge knowing how to adjust the exposure (a kind of slow-motion chimping).  I'll use 4-6 sheets of paper until I'm happy about exposure.

The Chamonix 4x5 is a much easier proposition to carry into the field, but it still takes a backpack and a medium weight tripod. For it I use HP5+ and FP4+, since cutting 10x8 sheets of paper under a safelight into 4x5 rectangles that fit the film holders perfectly is quite a challenge. The lens I have for it is a wide-normal so it is better for outdoor work too.

Large format is practically a different hobby/obsession to MF/35mm ("miniature cameras"), and I'm treading carefully around its edges - it would be easy to fall in and become one of those cranky bearded guys that can think of nothing else. That might mean, for example, that when Henry suggested I print the picture of Thomas, I would want to get a 10x8 enlarger (ever seen one? They travel by truck and need reinforced flooring!) A contact print through the back of the paper is the only way I'll ever manage to make a darkroom print of that one!

I'm vacillating on which direction I'm headed. I know it will be 4x5, and a Field camera. I also need it to be reasonably light, as part of its service will be landscapes in an area that involves ~2-weeks to walk in and out. I also want to do some portraiture (head & shoulders to full body). I'm bouncing between getting a 90mm + 180mm, or settling for a 120mm or 135mm, and being content with that.

Primary intention is contact prints (I like the 4x5 size), so no need for trucks and cranes, with heads the size of a VW.

Philip - I am LOVING this color palette.  It is not native to the Portra 160 and you must have a secret packed away somewhere.  Whatever the case, it is very unique and alluring.

A more from Ghent. Shirley getting back at me and Gary and Henry in the zone. Plus me, again missing focus, which I'm getting increasingly good at :p

Sincere thanks, James.  It is very subdued and peaceful.  Wouldn't necessarily have expected this from the Ektar.  But I'll take it!

This is - imho - a divine picture. A so well balanced view and the colors are absolutely fantastic, must look awesome in print. You make me envious about the photographic opportunities in NYC once more :) Can't remember when we had a nearly decent light here the last time.

 

Hi Stuart - While you were basking in warm sunlight somewhere outside of New York, I had the pleasure of spending a little over 4 hours with "Mikemgb" who was visiting from Chicago.  We started in Dumbo, Brooklyn, then cover lower Manhattan, then Chinatown, then Soho and Greenwich Village.  Shooting people and things and walking a talking.  Lots of fun.  You would have really enjoyed it, as would have Steve.  But unfortunately you both were MIA......next time.....

If it must be a field camera, I think the Chamonix is a bit better made than the Shen Hao. You might consider a Crown Graphic if you don't need a full set of movements, and you can hand hold it and use the rangefinder for focus if you don't mind missing the ground glass experience. Finally, for travel rather than portraits, the Travelwide (for which you supply your own 90mm lens) can't be beaten for size and lightness. 4x5 negs scan just fine on a flatbed and that will make your output a bit more flexible than contact prints only.

I use CRC-Vista and LTI-Lightside for film development.  They are in Manhattan.  CRC still develops E-6, LTI stopped last summer :(

I know that Steve uses the Color House, also in Manhattan.

Sixteen and Adam develop film yourself so you have your film immediatly even on sunday

Adam when the lab developed you save on a CD or sometimes you print  or you only get

your negative and  you scan at home

It was COLD today in NYC!!! BRRR!

Well done and at the right moment Adam and color is very nice.

 

I just bought 20 rolls of Portra 400 and gave to my young nephew some rolls

for his trip in Breme Germany , it's his new way of photography after working

with me in the lab to develop and print ... he said it's "magic" and glad to 

know analog ...  when he saw black & white appears on the paper ....
