MT0227 Posted November 28, 2017 Share #42982 Posted November 28, 2017 Wonderful photo Keith...very pleasant scene, great lines and fantastic tones. Taken shortly after the other two photos as I started to make my way back towards the start point. This one is looking east along the edge of the Downs, where they run down into Pewsey Vale.

wattsy Posted November 28, 2017 Share #42988 Posted November 28, 2017 (edited) Have the historical battle fields of Britain been as extensively marked and maintained as the civil and revolutionary war sites in America? I imagine, given length of history, and dearness of real estate, it would be quite a luxury on the Isles. I think of a photograph Ian posted a while back, he added that the scene was one upon which Kipling would have gazed during his life. I enjoyed that bit of extra. Wayne, all the sites of antiquity are mapped, have a certain amount of legal protection and have mostly been archaeologically assessed at some point. Any ordnance survey map in the UK include numerous references to historic sites, including known battlefields, forts, etc. Keith's neck of the woods (especially if you incorporate Salisbury Plain and the Stonehenge area which is only a day's walk away) has possibly the highest concentrations of such sites and points of interest in the UK. If you look at the Bing Map of the area (select OS map if you are able to) and scroll around you will see countless tumuli, henges, hill forts, etc. As Keith says, the Ridgeway is very close to the site of his photos from yesterday (Overton Hill, the southern end of the modern iteration of the path, is just a stroll over the fields to the north of his position) and this long distance footpath joins numerous hill forts (mostly of Iron age provenance), burial mounds (mostly bronze age but some of neolithic origin), etc. Fay Godwin is one of the best known photographers of this area and I recommend the book The Oldest Road: The Ridgeway if you want to read more about this long distance path and the area around Avebury. Unfortunately, the printing of Godwin's photos isn't so good in this book (at least it isn't in the edition I have) but it is an interesting and authoritative read. Historic England has an excellent detailed searchable register of buildings, monuments and sites of antiquity. stray cat Posted November 28, 2017 Share #42989 Posted November 28, 2017 (edited) This is fascinating - thank you Ian and Keith for showing and illustrating some of the stories of these areas. It is Sue and my ambition to walk these roads that Ian describes and Keith has photographed so beautifully. Looks like there's a danger those roads might be crowded with Leica Forum people though! By the way, Fay Godwin is one of my greatest influences - I saw her exhibition "Land" at the Serpentine Gallery in Lindon in 1985 and was blown away by her approach to landscape and the light. Anyway, here's a shot I found as I go through the scans the lab emailed to me. I have no idea what it is or even where I shot it - but I like it! light on a thing 2017 M2, 50mm Elmarit, Ilford XP2 Super Edited November 28, 2017 by stray cat

As to exploring Wiltshire, my 'go to' book for the Marlborough Downs is entitled 'Exploring Historic Wiltshire - Vol 1: North' by Ken Watts. Published by Ex Libris Press, ISBN 0-948578-85-8. A very knowledgable, readable book complete with photos and sketch maps. Pretty much any snippets I include with my photos comes from that book! PS - as and when you head this way, let me know if I can be of assistance with anything.
