Second, standing in the right corner, weighing in at 225 pounds (also a heavyweight although slightly more nimble :) )), Ektar!!!! (yeaaaah, raaaah, boooo   :o )

Adam,

In this particular (lighting) situation I also prefer Velvia, as it seems to separate colours better, which, IMHO adds interest to the picture.

Sincere thanks, Christoph.  I also like the Velvia 50 photo for the very reasons that you highlight.  However, the Ektar version has the advantage in terms of tonal range and, although the blues in the sky are not as prominent the photo, has a certain warm glow that the Velvia 50 photo doesn't have due to the higher contrast nature of the slide film.  The Ektar also retains more detail in the steel barge, particularly the portion that is closest to the lens (in the bottom right), which, in full resolution, has a sense of popping out of the photo in a 3D sense.

Of course, I am not prejudging either film stock; just highlighting some of the arguments in favor of the Ektar :)

The end of the road. You all know about my infatuation with this once highly prized mount. It now appears it is starring down its likely fate.

Today's match up: Velvia 50 vs Ektar  :)  [shot on the Hassy SWC at sunrise at the Dead Sea]

And your preference is.......? (I have mine :) )

First, standing in the left corner, weighing in at 245 pounds (a true heavyweight), Velvia 50!!!! (yeaaaah, raaaah, boooo  :o )

Adam, great shot. To my eyes the Velvia suits the subject here, as it is bold and graphic, and wins on pure colour. Were it not for the relatively insipid colour of the grassy stuff in the foreground in the Ektar shot, however, I could see a good case for that stock. But some occasions just scream one or the other - and on this occasion the Velvia wins - not on a knockout, but on points.

Thanks so much, Phil.  I love the play-by-play analysis.  It's funny b/c my wife rests her preference for Ektar partially on the more pleasing look of the straw in the foreground (even though I don't even think of it as a relevant subject in the scene).  It does look more natural in the full res version, and I think it could benefit from a tiny bit of shadow increase so as to render it even less relevant).  But I hear you loud and clear.  Man, the Ektar is on the ropes!  Can it survive the full 10 rounds?? :)

I guess this is an illustration of how truthful the opinion, it is virtually impossible to fairly judge films/cameras/lenses, unless they are shot from the exact same spot, and in the exact same moment in time. I love the way the Ektar handled the very subdued reflection of the setting sun; unfortunately I have to assume the Velvia did not get it........or, the further setting of the sun made it impossible for either film to get it. I cannot say exactly why, but I prefer the second, Ektar rendering. Maybe the extra 20 lbs the Velvia is sporting makes it a bit sluggish :)

Thanks, Wayne!

Uh-oh, the Ektar begins to punch back with renewed vigor, and survives another round!

You know what that means:  "Yo Adrian!!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I33u_EHLI3w

Adam, while I normally go for Velvia over Ektar...this is a tough one. The Ektar is very nice and warm here...but...I'm still going with Velvia.

Velvia for me too Adam. Though I think the Ektar shot is really nice on its own.

Recently I broke a finger on my left hand, which had to be pinned and the hand plastered. Using a camera has become very difficult, but I have a technique. I think my brain must have been affected, because I just processed a roll of HP5+ (Iso 800) film in Rodinal with 50ml of dev instead of 5mm! Even the sprocket holes went black!! And you should see me load a film into a dev tank with one hand. A terrifying sight.

The big surprise is that after laborious scanning, I still got (unintentionally) amazing images, by my standards.

Here are some examples, for interest.

This is part of how I manage my R8. The M cameras requires a different method.

, using a mini tripod jammed into the plaster caste next to my thumb.
