Christoph it's a painting :)

Superb picture , wonderful silhouette and background

A great shot.

Phil,

I could not agree more on the sentiments and thoughts expressed by Dan and you. Shortly after visiting Australia earlier this year, I embarked on a 14 day tour in Italy, just me, my backpack and my M5 ... and I loved every meter of the 290 km by-foot journey. I'd say those are life-changing experiences (except perhaps that my life hasn't changed really).

In contrast, particularly, to Adam's viewpoint on using "professional" film exclusively I embarked on this journey using decidedly non-professional film only. That shows in the results, as you will be able to discover in my next few pictorial contributions, but it also was exactly what I wanted to achieve.

With that let me begin with a few pictures of Florence, my starting point.

Figurine in the Basilica Santa Croce.

This was a bit of an experiment. I put the camera on a tripod, aimed it roughly at the Big Dipper, turned the shutter speed dial to B and held my cable release for a while, hoping the constellation would show without too much trails and also hoping to catch a few fireworks, but not so many that the stars would be obscured. It was New Year's Eve and luckily in an area without many fireworks enthusiasts.

Oh Christoph - what a brilliant thing to do! I can only imagine what different perspectives a walk such as that might have suggested for you - in all aspects of life. Nietzsche said that the greatest ideas are conceived while walking, and who can argue? Can't wait to see more of the pictures as they unfold.

Speaking of which, that second picture is a masterpiece. It is as if, even at your starting point, you have absorbed the thoughts and culture of the Renaissance and of that most cultured of cities and this immersion has immediately been channeled into this photograph. What a brilliant picture.

Wow, these pictures are absolutely amazing. To me your choice of film seems perfect, as the visual effect you achieved suits the subjects in an outstanding way. I'm truly and deeply impressed! Looking forward to your next contributions.

Wonderful both, like paintings, the second being my favourite, so enjoyable to look at. Surely only film could render in this way, and if anyone wanted a reason for switching from digital, or at least trying film, I'd show them these marvellous photos. Can't wait to see some more of these.

Well, that is frustrating reading all the 'BOOM' reactions & not being able to see the image!  Broken link, presumably  :(

I must search in a previous post , the comparison between the same picture taken at the same time , one with my M7 and Kodak Portra 160 and one with my MP and Kodak TX , same lens. The crop of the color converted in b&w lack a lot of details in comparison the same taken in b&w

Henry, that is interesting but I think that is more a comparison of the difference between dye based film (Portra) and silver based film (Tri-X) rather than any kind of proof that B&W converted colour is inherently inferior to B&W. Comparisons are the kind of thing I want to get away from when choosing to use film. Better IMO to use what you have available or what is practical to use in given circumstances rather than get wrapped up in what might be a bit better.
