Hi, Phil. It's a f/1.2. It has AF, which is pretty slow, but it's a 'focus-by-wire' lens, so MF is a poor option. It's a lovely lens, though.

Thanks Eoin. I had the FD manual focus version of that lens for a little while - one of the nicest lenses I've ever used, but oh so heavy and didn't balance well on any of my cameras (F1N and, at the time, A1). I have the f1.8 version now and far prefer it - to carry at least.

This is George, whom I met whilst photographing a building in downtown Boston. George started the conversation be saying I'd just photographed the world's greatest inventor of the past 60 years, then proceeded to tell me of his inventions - modifications to the DreamLiner to reach Mars, and ones that had been used by MIT among them. He was a real gentleman and quite the character.

This is a very nice portrait. I doubt George has ever been the subject of better. It is good you were there; it would be such a shame to have no decent image of "the worlds greatest inventor of the past 60 years." :)

Whenever I view, or take, such an image, I always wonder how long it has been since the last portrait of the individual was taken........or, if one will be taken again.

Made some test shots with my Ricoh GR1s lately. As I wrote some time ago, my camera has some faults. Due to these problems I left it at home for more than a year. Two weeks ago I decided, that it couldn't get worse, so I opened the camera and found a broken wire which runs from the main capacitor to the circuit board. After fixing this wire, the camera came to life again. After the rebuild, which even brought back all of the missing LCD segments the camera seemed to work like a charm again. Unfortunately with my second film the problems came back. While the camera sat in my bag, it automatically rewinded the film - very annoying :( As it seems, the next time I try to solve these problems, I have to dig further into the inner parts of this little beauty. If anyone has special knowledge about these cameras and possibly has a solution for me, feel free to contact me :)

Here is one of the shots from the test roll:

You are too kind, Wayne. People like George are perhaps all to rare, and for this reason I feel privileged to have been able to make a portrait of him.

Philosophically, your thoughts on photography and life are most welcome and intriguing. I sometimes - no, to be honest, often - look at pictures I took years ago and wonder about the people in them. This is one of the powers of photography and of course reason enough to take pictures that include people, especially as the main subject. For instance I took this slice (less than 1% of the picture area of a 35mm FP4 frame) from a much larger (telephoto) picture made in Venice in 1980. It reminds me a lot of the film "Blow Up" (don't start me on that wonderful piece of art!) in that the lady is kind of distracted and pulling away from the man. What had she seen? Why is he unconcerned? And now I wonder those age-old questions - what became of them? Where are they now? Are they still together? Indeed, were they photographed together again?

p1390649746-5.jpg

It's just one of the things I find photography gives me in life that I find nowhere else.

Thank you again for your thoughtful comment Wayne. I'd also like to add that your recent series, with the new old camera and the funky film, really enhance what you're doing photographically. The technique really suits the style and substance of the pictures.
