I decided today to start exploring just how flexible XP2 is in terms of varying its development in black and white chemicals. For my first experiment I thought I'd see if can be pulled with extra exposure and reduced development to reduce contrast, so I selected some scenes around the house involving windows to see if I could get the relatively dark interior properly exposed and yet not have the windows pure white. My starting point was to double the exposure by exposing it at an EI of 200, and I halved my usual development (same HC-110, 1+49, 20ºC) to 4 minutes. The photographs aren't intended to be artistic statements, but simply technical subjects.

All came out a bit dark, but easily rescued. I should probably try EI 100 and the same development next.

Thanks Chris I'm really interested in your results. Thanks for doing this.

Hi Gregor - Yes, these doodads work on the M7.  They also work on my M-A, but the connectivity is better on the M7.  The only problem is that the batter compartment on the piece that attaches to the flash is quite roomy and the batteries tend to shift and get out of position and that leads to disconnectivitiy.  This was particularly acute as I was constantly taking the flash in and out of my coat pocket.  I eventually gave it a rest and just attached the flash to the camera.

I didn't know that the yongnuo stuff works with Leica Ms, well ... I've never tested it. Good to know .... I bought my yongnos some years ago for the digital Canon equipment. Thank you for your tip ... And take care!

Best

Gregor

Chris - looks good to me.  Yes, I feel like with the pull you could have opened up one more stop and still kept the highlights under control.  It is good to know what this method of development will do in these situations.  Thanks for sharing!

That amount of frozen water is almost twice our heaviest rainfall in a day here in Wales. Now that's saying something- man I thought we got rain bad sometimes- but you've got it in snow! That's serious stuff coming your way. Just take care as rush hour is going to be so much fun! Stay warm buddy!

Kind regards

Thanks, Christopher.  It was a fun morning.  Early on there was snow, but not a lot of people (due to the hype everyone stayed home).  The snow fairly quickly turned to sleet and hail.  Started in the Village and then meandered to Times Square, where there were more photographers and newscasters than people.  Then strolled down 42nd street across town.  Shot a couple rolls of portra and a roll of tri-X.  Not sure what I'll get but I am sure that I will in any case be here boring Gary soon enough! :)

A couple with SWC/M, Tri-X

So, knowing you also have an SA21 and film M, (as do I, and Eoin C plus likely others) what are your thoughts on the SWC Vs the M+SA21?

I always intend doing a sort of side by side but never seem to try it. Eoin did, and the answer wasn't really all that conclusive.

Tough question Gary!

I find it hard to directly compare the two, given the big big difference in square vs 3:2 @such a wide FOV, and even more so 35mm vs 120.

My SA21 may also not be the very best example, bit of a beater. (My Biogon is in much better nick.)

For scans/prints, I find the Biogon just jaw droppingly perfect, right down to every photon in the extreme corners, and for teeny tiny far away things right across the frame.

The 21SA doesn't give me the same feelings at all for resolution but I think that's probably mainly down to 35mm film. I find it a bit disappointing for architecture for example for this reason.

Distortion wise I find no noticeable difference, both superb.

Ultimately I'd throw the 21 under a bus in a heartbeat to save the SWC   :)

Not a very interesting older 21SA shot, but maybe shows the resolution (same scanner.)

Thanks,

Richard

Thanks Richard.

The square Vs 3:2 is made simpler for me by using the A16 film back, and while I am the first to agree all SWC shots should be square, it gives a bit more miles per gallon, and I find some shots are more suited to a rectangular format.

I was possibly trying to rationalize my equipment list for the Europe trip in a few months. I will take the M6 and the 21/35/50, that's a given.

If the SA21 gave me "much the same" sort of view as the SWC, it would allow me to jettison 2 kilos plus of camera weight. Not to mention a heap of weird film.

Ultimately though I can see myself taking both/all.

Thanks again

Gary

In the context of travel, I think the 21SA would more than do the job - I took mine on a big trip recently - but as you know, there's nothing quite like using the SWC. :)

Unless you're free from time pressure/have dedicated photography time available, I'd just take the M6 gear.

Another 21SA travel shot, a bit 'unique' with colour film but I like it. The 40cm MFD is a real bonus, selfies are back on the menu (my arms reach doesn't get the film plane to 70cm) - fun for random family shots - or just a bit of spray and pray at f8 too.
