KEith - Technically, this photo is great.  But if I may be honest the tree has no "zen" and doesn't facilitate a strong composition.  In a way its limpness is even a bit depressing...

When I read Gary's post yesterday I immediately thought "Hmm, I spent Saturday afternoon taking pictures of the same scene with (1) M240 + 50mm Summilux-M ASPH and (2) 1957 IIIg + 1951 5cm Summicron Collapsible.  I had not set off with the intention of making direct comparisons between digital and film, more a case of feeling I had been neglecting the digital pairing and that I was keen to finish the film.  Anyway, Gary's interesting post caused me to actually make the comparisons and having done so, start posting them here - and I apologise for somewhat jumping on the bandwagon so to speak.

So - today's offering - same equipment - same Saturday walk - one digital, one Acros 100.

Comments re their relative merits welcomed.

Christopher - Oh yes :)  Once I got onto the use of flash in the snow blizzards I wouldn't go any other way...

You're brave putting a flash unit on a leica rangefinder [emoji6]. I thought that was frowned on in the Leica community. Great equipment though. I think we all secretly put a flash on our M's, but don't admit to it.

Kind regards

Christopher

Thanks, Henry.  I wish I could be as "end-to-end" as you and many others here.  But I just can't... :(

.... and you still have to develop yourself and it works even on weekends
Work well done , believe me because you do it and you take care better

than the lab... and in addition less than 2 Euros one roll :D

I have the same flash Adam . It works fine

Nice combo 28 -M7 ! :)

Best Henry

Holy shi$t Christopher these photos are AMAZING!!  I am sure they are 10000000% better than what a normal fare wedding photographer would produce.  They are just so wonderful to view and I am sure they are 100000% more wonderful for the family.  Great job!

Here are a few more shots of this quirky wedding from September 2015.

Nothing "normal" about this wedding.... it was good fun. I do wonder if the lens may have been the 28mm Biogon too. Looking at the shots I am not sure. The film was definitely Kodak Portra 160 though. It was a very relaxed wedding.

Regards

Christopher

Christoph - I hope so!  We soon shall see!

Adam

I am sure it was worthwhile, and I am looking forward to the pictures!

Hi Frank - Many thanks.  I typically use my M-A for the flash in the snow b/c of the lack of electronics.  However, I have had some issues with the flash not firing on command all the time and have much better luck with the M7 (probably due to the electronics!).  I have historically use there manual setting on the and tinkered with the distance to flash at short distances given that I shoot mostly at close range.  Today I used the TTL setting and didn't mess with any adjustments.  We shall see how it will come out.  With this kind of crude junk photography I frankly don't think it matters all that much and there is lemonade to be made out of lemons in any case... :)

Adam,

I have the same set up and use the M7 mostly with color film. Your results with. SD 24D look good for fast steet work! May I ask what your flash settings are? AUTO TTL, MANUAL...Any flash compensation +or - 1/3 increments? Thanks in advance!

Frank

Holy SH$T - this is awesome!!!  The tones in the mountains is sublime and the scale and perfect verticals are crazy good.  Congrats!

Gary - Shooting flash with others cramps my style a bit and blows my cover as a "newspaper journalist" (a card that I had to constantly play today, with some success).  Having said this, I find shooting with friends one of the most enjoyable experiences.

I wish I was in New York tomorrow

Sorry Adam,

I was looking for some reference to settings. Was curious because I like your results in the past. But let me be clear ....my curiosity is not aligned with '...crude junk photography ".

I appreciate that, Frank.  But I really didn't fuss with any settings and just switched the main setting to the TTL function.  I am not an expert in flash and coordinating flash levels with EVs (wish I were).

And, to be clear, my reference to crude junk photography was a reference to MY photography of this nature - no one else's. :)

The lovely lighting and a perceived warmth make this a memorable photograph. Oh and I enjoyed the rest of your series on Smugmug too.

Thanks

Right, I sort of promised the colour segment, and while they are not as simple as the B&W, I was happy that the B&W post didn't turn into a squabble match. I think most are happy to use either or both, some are film only, and I respect that, others are digital only as well, both are happy.

The film shots were with the R8, and the R28-70 zoom, used Kodak 200, so a basic el cheapo colour film. Processed locally by a semi decent lab, and scanned via my Plustek 8100. Same deal as the mono, slight downsizing to match the digital dimensions. No sharpening, no mucking with them. I'd be less than honest if I said I had a faultless scanning discipline for colour, the Kodak 200 always seems to give me a bit of a cast.

Digital was same as the B&W stuff, all with the X-Pro2, and this time I used the Fuji XF18-56 zoom, and where I was able to, I matched the view zoom-wise with each camera, R8 being an SLR, Fuji having an EVF. Similar/same apertures. RAW files converted with the Fuji raw convertor, then converted to a JPEG in Photoshop.

Same deal as the B&W, take it all with a grain of salt, no scrapping, it's more an exercise in seeing how the two mediums stack up.

I did one other, this complete with dust and colour cast from poor processing is blatantly obvious.
