OK. Here is the link to my now uploaded Blurb book.

http://au.blurb.com/books/7611901-the-eloquence-of-hands

Comments and criticisms welcome.

I like it a lot. Although not related, it put me in mind of this project by Stu Robertson - Peace in 10,000 hands (once you get past the first 16-1/2 minutes)...

Thank you Adam, I think you might be right. An image like that only works if its symmetrical. I'll have a look when I'm back home.

Philip - Thanks very much for the additional feedback and I also share your annoyance at the generic feedback workflow of flickr, etc.   I really like this photo on many levels.  Great colors, shapes and simplicity.  I wonder, though, if it could use a slight tilt to the left.  It could be my hangover but it seems ever so slightly off kilter.

Thanks to you all again for the further comments.  I think I will remove the blah blah on each page and just stick to the photos.   I will also reconsider how I present the "alter-egos" and also whether to pepper in some other types related but different people shots to mix things up.   I might go all out and just have a 2016 edition general "NYC people watching" book that is very diverse and includes 30-40 of my most favorite photos from the street (of which only a handful of these "anonymous" photos would be included).  I just don't know if I have the energy for a project of this scale with the time that I have....

And Jean-Marc - thanks for the typo and I am going to immediately fire my typist!

Erl - Thanks for your comments on this and I agree with Henry that your book seems like an encapsulation of work over a long period of time.  The theme is very creative and "artistic" and you've laid it out well.  One can quibble with some of the specific layout formats that you chose, but that is really a matter of personal style and if it works for you that's all that matters.

Adam,

would you correct a spelling mistake in your book ?

it should read : exacerbate : a "c" instead of the actual "s" !

I'll most probably buy it then :-)

edit: just saw your no text version which I prefer ...

My 2 cents, JM

PS You'll have to sign it some day, next year eventually  :-)

I'm with Mitch on this, Adam. I find the verbage to distract from the images, which I don't feel require explanation. A preface to explain your concept is fine.

I'm not sure if it would work, but I think I would like to see the wonderful 'alter-ego' shadows grouped together - perhaps 4 on one 2-page spread?

Adam, I just had a quick flick through your book and my first impression is that there is a just bit too much "sameness". I know your intent is to portray NYérs in the way you have, but I would have liked it to broken up just bit with some variation of technique.

Easy to say, I know, but the how is the task of the artist.

I agree with the no caption style. I am just finishing a book on "The Eloquence Of Hands", and have stated in the intro that I have deliberately omitted captions etc as the images must speak for themselves. However, it is always the artist's choice.

I am about to upload my book to Blurb now. I may post a link to it when it is ready, if anyone is interested.

My books are purely self indulgent, as I think you said yours are, but that is where I get my pleasure.

Adam,

I looked through the full text version. Personally, I like the two and three word captions. I find that anything more is superfluous, and even detracts from the impact of the images.

In essence, I like to let the images speak for themselves. However, knowing a location, such as Wall Street, does enhance the experience for me.

Cheers

J :)

In response to comments that I received on my "Anonymous" New Yorkers photo book that I shared a couple of weeks ago (particularly Christoph's critique), I have reworked the book in order to add text throughout the pages that try to provide a storyline that (to some degree) runs through each page.  I also added only one photo per two page spread and mixed up the sizes and formatting of the photos.  And yes, I added a little blurb about gear on the last page.  Not suggesting this book is going any where fast; but on reflect I didn't recognize that the flow and impact of the read could be meaningfully improved with these changes.

Can I trouble youz to have another look? :)

Adam,

I like the new layout as it allows the viewer to concentrate more on a single picture. I agree with some other commenters that the text as it stands adds little and could be left away (possibly just the date, time or street name or a combination would still give some information making each picture more identifiable - I think mentioning the camera, lens and film used ... were all mentioned already earlier  )

I would not write the text into the picture itself, not purist enough for me. Well done - do you still find time to sleep?

Best regards,

Christoph

Tried out a roll of Fomapan100 yesterday - first time I have used it.  Hasselblad 500C, Planar 80mm, Hasselblad yellow/green filter,  Rodinal 1:50.  First reaction is that it is finer-grained and gives more pleasing results than Fomapan 200.

A Decisive Moment (!)

Sorry Adam , not to have time to read all your book.

It's fine now and I am glad you put at the end that your photos are taken with Leica camera and film.

Great work  and superb pictures I will say that perhaps these creatures come from another planet,

another world , so it is magic !

Best

Also taken in color with Kodak Portra 160 in the same time , same place with my M7

Here a same picture with my MP and Kodak TMAX100  ... and with the same duck

> I prefer in b&w. Fog goes well in black , more dramatic

I wonder how the many pictures of people staring at their hands will look in 5, 10, 20 years time.

Will we all be gazing vacantly into the middle distance by then, or still watching our hands.

...For those whose welcome I have not worn out, I attach a link with a version that pulled the text from the pages except for the first and last (which I moved to the second).  Seems rather benign to me, but am eager to collect any and all comments :)

http://www.blurb.com/b/7610598-anonymous-new-yorkers

I like it like this, Adam. I think the variety of responses you have received is indicative of how much individual preferences play a role in our perceptions, and that there is no 'right way', other than what is true to the author.

The things I would change are counter to what someone else would do, and therefore have no greater or lesser value. What a can of worms you have opened! ;)

One definite positive is that you've managed to get a lot of us to look and critique. A second one is that everyone has been aligned on the quality of the photo's, with varying perspectives being focused on the format - That is an achievement in itself.

Many thanks, Christoph, Henry and Eoin.

I really appreciate your time with this; I owe (and everyone else) you a pint or two then next time you are in NYC :)

I actually received the very first version of the book that I originally posted and, notwithstanding the sub-optimal formatting, the images are really superb if I may say so.  I will put some finishing touches on the reformatting version and have another book printed and see what it looks like.  It is not cheap, but the highest quality paper that Blurb uses is really very good.

Thanks again and now back to sharing photos!

You seem to be able to make magic with that SWC Adam, but if I was brutally honest, the foreground lower right "annoys" me.

No way have I taken anything that good, so I am a poor critic, but the boulder/rock which is silhouetted competes for attention to my mind.
