The latest addition to my NYC Snow Blizzard series... :)

My website

The series I am maintaining in the Street Photography Forum

M-A, 28m elmarit pre-asph v4, Portra 800

This is excellent, Adam. The light streaks in the background from the slow exposure add to the fill-flash sharpness, as do the snow flakes / flurry.

@ Doc & Philipus - thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

@ Miller Damn. That Image is incredible. Colours are absolutely stunning. Framing as well. It fits perfect. (As I keept an eye on this series from the beginning, I have to say that I prefer the colour ones way more than the Black and White ones.) Keep it up!

Kodak Portra 160 has really a nice color better than 400 IMO in color saturation.

Look at these flowers (Bougainvillea) taken from SE Asia

I like it a lot, Adam. I was actually wondering the other day if you would be able to shoot some more this winter for your blizzard series. Help me understand the technical aspects - you used a flash at the sync speed with ISO 800 film, right? Any exposure advice for a street flash (no not that kind) rookie such as I?

Terrific clarity and definition in this one Jean-Marc. It looks truly three-dimensional. And you've pressed the trigger at just the right time to create cool dynamics among the three ladies. Wow, look at that!, says the middle one. Huh, what? says the one to the right more busy with her phone than with reality.

I like this one Henry, I'm a complete fool for beautiful flowers shot against the sky.

Just one "WOW" and a one word "superb" Adam.I love your SP

Adam I ask myself Portra 800 versus 400 in example must have more grain

but when I watch your picture it's not the case ! amazing

yes, Henry.  The film seems to enhance the red not only in reds, but in oranges, yellows and purples - basically anything color that has red in it.

Very nice, Henry. How do you think the same scene would have been with Portra 160/400?

I need Adam for confirmation

Eoin , I regret not to have this picture with both film (Portra 160/Ektar 100) to answer you

I notice that Ektar has a little less color saturation and contrast than Portra 160 but Ektar is

a little sharper and has fine grain.

I prefer Portra 160 for Asia because of great luminosity in these countries.

Thanks Philip, I've always liked shooting TLRs which are a bit less intrusive imo than a 500 Hassy (which I also have).

Cheers, JM

Thanks, Gentlemen.  I really appreciate your time.

Max - I 100% agree with you on the color vs B&W, which his why am trending toward shooting only color for this series going forward.

Philip - This one was actually lost in my pile from last winter and somewhat was forgotten.  :o   But I am very much looking forward to a few good snow blizzard days this winter and will be ready!    As for the technique, it is really fairly crude and I owe a lot to the resilience of the film.  I basically rate the film at 800 to get a little more speed and then will shoot at 1/45 or 1/60 (whatever the flash setting is the for the camera, can't remember) and will guess the EV of the scene and then stop down an extra +/- two stops to compensate for the flash.  And then I hold on tight and shoot!!  Shooting and not being shy is the most important part of the technique! :)

Great shot!

What a look(er) ;)

excellent, Philip . Just love the greens in the fist and the highlights in the second are really nice.  I don't know why I can't get such lovely nearly blown highlights with my provia 100!!

Very nice - again. Did you try other films on this scene as well? I could see why you took the ektar in your previous pictures, with the more monochromatic scenery here I am not so sure. The green in the foreground to me almost looks like HDR ...

Thanks a lot, Gary and Christoph.

Christoph - This was my first time shooting this particular scene.  I stand by the Ektar for extracting some surreality out of what really was quite ordinary, as it was a very disappointing cloudless morning.  I moved around the little bay once the sun started coming up  thinking about how much of a waste of a good night sleep I could have had and then I saw some interesting colors coming out of the horizon from the east (which is what this photo is facing).  I like how the ektar enhanced the colorful morning glow that I saw.  And I used a 2 stop ND grad to keep good exposure in the foreground.  Didn't have to open the shadows a bit i post.
