Ernest Posted January 20, 2023 Share #85124 Posted January 20, 2023 On 1/17/2023 at 4:51 AM, 4r36 said: Ernest, I don't know whether you had the chance to take a look at it already, but in the Leica M lenses section there is a discussion about wide-open shots. I'm actually curious to know whether in this image, the one above, and another one you uploaded a couple of weeks ago (I don't find it right now), you took into consideration how the lenses at hand, the 50 APO and the Thambar if I'm correct, render the out of focus areas. Or are you more focused on how they render colours? Just curios, as I really like the shots... Thanks for the heads up on the discussion of wide-open shots, but to answer your question, I simply go with whatever f-stop works for enough depth of field if I am shooting Lagoon studies, usually late in the afternoon or morning. What intrigues me more is color field abstraction that reduces the photography vocabulary to flat fields that play off of color and texture. Blur, erasure, and the presence of absence are concepts I find challenging. I like working with the APO 50 LHSA and the black chrome Summilux-M with their classic knurled focusing ring, as well as the Summicron DR. Lately, I have been shooting the Thambar-M without the CS filter, too. So, coming back to your question, the answer is that I am not really thinking about shooting wide open to capitalize on the out-of-focus look; I am more concerned about the sensory impression of color. 3

Last question: where did you hide the Leica to gain access to the event ? Haha all great questions. This was after an installation & shoot by Spencer Tunnick on Bondi Beach , needing council approval to turn into a nude beach for 2 hours (5am-7am) in the first time in it's history . I stood out like a sore thumb wearing my Leica . Oh and thanks for the feedback on the result, as I under-exposed this shot and had to wrestle with it a little to get it to this . Your wrestling was worth the while. It is my experience too: to get the warm colors of the sky at dusk and dawn you have to underexpose overall or meter for the sky...otherwise you'll get a bland bright sky without these delicious hues .
