My son photographing with his Leica IIIg

Leica M6, Summicron 35

You have one son who is a connoisseur !

a Leica IIIg at this age , a great beginning in photography

... like my young nephew who prints with me in my darkroom few days ago and

says that's magic when the image appears on paper ... he left with a few rolls of

Kodak TX and Portra and I gave him one of my analog Leica cameras... and left

now his digital Sony at home

Nice picture in b&w STK

In fact, my son took me back to film photography and Leica in 2014, buying a IIIg. In the meantime, we both enjoy the M6, M7, MP and M-A in addition to the IIIg.

Some boring landscape. But to be honest, I can't imagne to get this calm grain in a digital way. I love film! (M2, Summar 2/50, Neopan 400 @3200, Microphen)

Great, Henry! There seems to be symmetry with some elements, but isn't. Also the couple sitting middle-right ... makes it so funny!

Love the grain, Steve.  Very well executed

Pen F 40 f/1.4 Tri-X Plustek Scan

Not sure what the vertical line(s) are and how they may have occurred. (Lab developed)

I think it is wonderful.  The full greatness doesn't quite come through in the scan.  But it is still great!

Pure and original B&W picture is better than color picture converted to b&w

I prefer b&w version

Henry - in a wet print I fully agree.  But in a scan I don't agree with your flat statement.  I think we can all agree that some of the magic of B&W film is lost as soon as it is scanned.  Some of the sharpness.  Some of the blacks and the transition among a range of tones.    Is it still "better" than a color scan converted?  Perhaps in most cases but not in all cases.

Adam , I say most cases because I compared in several tests

first with digital color converted to b&w when I shoot in digital

secondly now color film converted to b&w

I cannot find the post I share here but just find pictures

respectively

1-color Kodak Portra 160 crop 100%

2-converted b&w LR and SE crop

"loss of details in the shadows"  if you don't care of details

you can convert ....

3-Kodak TX400 crop

4-Kodak Portra 160 original Tiff >Jpeg no correction

5-Kodak TX400 original Tiff>Jpeg no correction

I have original pictures in Kodak Portra 160 and Kodak TX400

at your disposal  I can send you

Technical conditions : same lens 50 Summicron

Leica R4S and Leicaflex with tripod

taken at the same place , same moment

Pic 1 : Kodak Portra 160 (dev myself in Tetenal) crop

Pic 2 : color converted to b&w

notice loss of details in the shadows under the foot

Pic 3 : Kodak TX 400 (dev myself in Kodak D76)

Pic 4 : Original pictures

Kodak Portra 160

Pic 5 : Kodak TX400

I also see the difference  when I crop with the enlarger and print with Ilford paper

That said you can convert color to b&w if you want !

In my case I avoid... it's the reason I always have 2 cameras one with color roll

and one with b&w roll

I understand now why Leica produces M Monochrome without the Bayer Filter
