This is in the south transept of the Abbey of St. Denis, a little north or Paris. This church was the traditional burial place for French kings (who were dispersed during the revolution).

Much more important and interesting, it is the birthplace of gothic architecture. This is absolutely the first gothic church, and the style was initially developed by the abbot of the day, a man called Suger. The place is wonderful. The banlieu of St Denis is now a rather dowdy suburb, and the square out in front of the church is home to a quite large bazaar of primarily North African origin. But the church is worth an easy visit by metro.

Very nice, photo, Michael.  Looks like a lot of history packed into one place and the photo provides a unique perspective.

excellent and look forward to seeing more!

PS: is that a real spiderweb??  Looks like something created by Spiderman himself :)

Thanks Adam!  The spiderweb was real, I had to visit this spot at sunrise for an environmental consulting job regularly over the summer and there were always large spiderwebs all over the place when I first arrived in the morning.

love the spiders web

Thanks Neil!

The 'master' returns, so good to see your work again. Fab images, as always.

Thanks Steve!

I developed the first Japan roll today, here's one from Tokyo.  This was shot handheld at 1/12th, one of those moments that I was glad to be using a rangefinder.

This image is 'blooming' marvellous. The eye of course is drawn by the contrast in bucket loads, plus the Japanese symbols / writing. Not many would see such a photo opportunity.

In the great tradition of Philip, and latterly of Gary, too: a self-portrait (please note - not "selfie"):

It does look like a selfie to me :)

The second picture is very nice however.

I think a selfie is, strictly speaking, a photo made by holding the camera out at arm's length (or on a stick) and pointing it at yourself (with or without friends).

Yes, possibly started by this unknown man, with his Minox Camera:

That being a leisure suit, we can date the phenomenon to the mid-70s.......20th century.:)

I think a selfie is a process of shooting yourself and misinterpreting it as a good idea. However you do it , at arms length or from close, with a phone or a hasselblad.

Considering the vast world around us, it has always confused me why people choose to photograph themselves in it. I mean I get the point but truly not really.

Obviously please don't take it as direct critique of Stray Cat photo, it is really not my intention to single him out. I guess it just sparked the conversation.

I personally have never been impressed with any selfie, even from the biggest masters of photography. I never know what these photos communicate. Maybe I need to educate myself on this a bit more.

Sterling stuff, Phil. I like both. Looking at your watch, it is amazing how much detail that lens resolves. And I find it interesting to see the effect of the orange filter. Those clouds look really yummy.

In support of Ian's corrective on the term "selfie:"

The lack of a true, solid definition for the term allows for a dismissive attitude toward mistake or carelessness...........Allowing the possibility presenting same as "Art", i.e. intended "selfie." Such a thing cannot be good for photography. :)
