Hello to all of You - I took some time to look at Your superb pics as I always do, but I also read some of Your thoughts about Photography. To me, Photo-graphy means light-draw, drawing with light. Not calculating a picture from the upper corner on the left to the bottom corner on the right. I use a digital camera for professional stuff I have to take a picture of - because it is an easy, fast way of doing. To say this has anything to do with Photography or to say it would be a source of pleasure or of personnal interest  is impossible to me. It would be as if I'd say a world-famous Hamburger Restaurant would be in any way comparable to Paul Bocuse . Or a master's painting to a poster.

This does not mean I can afford Bocuse or any other chef's restaurant more than once in 5 or ten years... or that I never eat an industrial Hamburger. It also does not mean I think the photos I shoot are of any great quality. But the pleasure to shoot film, mesure the light, try to find a nice picture or shoot at the right moment like a hunter, be serious and curious just as a child when develloping the film, then happy as on Christmas eve when this or that negative seems to be great and dries overnight... then being develloping on paper next evening and having the impression of a little miracle every time the image appears - no digital camera offers any of these emotions. And never will.

To take pictures with exactly the same ( Voigtländer) camera my father used to take pics of me in 1958 and that he offered me in 1969 and that still works - I do not believe any of the modern cameras will perform for decades, even if well taken care of. To work with a vintage Meopta Magnifax to get the final pictures - so perfectly unperfect, so perfect in a very poetical way - to me a source of pleasure, like meditation or Yoga or similar to other people.

Emotions, pleasure, possibility to know what one does and why one does it - to learn - I do not find these essential things in digital picture making. These, aswell as image quality reasons, are why I stay with film and old-school Photography. Also, I do think this wonderful art - as it is an art - might disappear, just as so many artforms have disappeared or are disappearing sooner or later.

Personnal thoughts. Not true for most people, probably. But these are the reason's why I go on with film.

My absence on this thread has seen some amazing photographs and engaging personal thoughts on the individual approach to the "recording medium" of choice. Perhaps I should take time and look at what motivates my choices but the emotions you expressed Jean-Marie speak volumes and I was especially touched by the continuity of the art you practice and its connection to your father!

Sincerely

Charles

I'm getting the impression that throwing the XP2 in with the Superia is giving me way more grain than developing it in HC-110.

It has something in this picture , who calls me when I see the expression of the man at left.

Breat XP2 of Ilford

Well done Chris

To add my point of view to the film debate, I think it's just a matter of personal choices. Should I take up photography? Or painting? Or sculpture? And if I take up painting, should I paint with oil or water colors? Oil is the superior medium but water color is more intuitive. Or maybe both? Painting used to be the commercial standard for portraits, but it got replaced by photography. It was never killed by photography and still goes on as a fine art today. Digital replaced film but film will hopefully continue to exist as a fine art medium.

In print,  a good reproduction lens is also desirable in the ultimate result of photography ,

as in hi fi with loudspeakers that reproduce the original sound recorded through the microphone like Shure brand
In photography , the same role as the lens mounted on the camera  :)

the two extreme ends of the photo chain

German Focotar Leitz lens mounted on Focomat
