My kit for the upcoming fortnight in America. The Portra 160 is for two nights we'll be spending in Cape Cod. just been leafing through "Cape Light" again and can't wait to actually visit these places!

I might be in America too in August (Seattle)... I should stock some Trix as well! ... and maybe convince myself and my wife that I need a 50mm beside of the 35 ...

Question

First of all forget about the background..........well no don't forget about the background, its the neg I want to talk about. With regards to the stupid background, that shit aint going to happen again, I WILL in future make sure that I have the correct size background to fill the frame.

You can see I have got these horrible vertical lines on the neg, initially I thought it was due to the defused window light coming through the net curtains, you know the ones I mean )see attached picture

And with the exposure being over 1 minute (1 min 17 seconds) to be precise I am thinking that that is the reason for these horrible lines is due to the curtains.

Then to my horror I thought about this some more and I am now thinking that it could possibly be coming from the developing process. I'm developing in trays in my dark room and the trays are the normal 8x10 trans from B&H that have channels in the bottom so that it is easy to get the neg out. I use 1 ltr of each of the chemicals so I think there is plenty of liquid in the tray, I also shake the trays to get some turbulent flow. Maybe the lines are due to the uneven developing of the neg (god forbid).............is that possible or am I just over thinking this shit??

I will be able to fix the background in PS, but not so sure I can do that in the darkroom (make burn in a vinaigrette)........theres one thing for sure I will try and do something with it in the dark room

Christoph - Sincere thanks.  I totally agree with you and the Ektar seems to have a mind of its own.  I find that the best strategy is to just go with it and see where it takes you.  Of course, many times it takes you no-where... :)

With your series of NY cityscapes manage to show the many subtle variations in the light and light colour, variations that we all experience but hardly "see". From my side you can simply continue ...

Looks good, Gary.  Toners are all renders very nicely.  Nicely exposed and appears to be sharp, too.   Congrats on the new gear.

Very nice, Ian.  Almost looks as if you used a yellow or orange filter, but then again how could you affix it?! :)

Another lovely one, great colors thanks to the great (ahem, pro) film stock :)

A photo I wouldn't normally take – midday in uninteresting light – but the subject is one I couldn't ignore. Not quite so rare in this particular part of the world (especially in neighbouring Wiltshire) though still uncommon, the Burnt Orchid (Neotinea Ustulata) is one of the more distinctive orchids left in the wild. This group was on the wonderful Martin Down nature reserve south of Salisbury. Before the advent of 20th century industrialised agriculture, it would not have been uncommon to have fields with many thousands of these (and other orchids) growing.

The best you've shared thus far, Steve.  And glad you posted it here as I couldn't grasp the full effect in the FB feed.  The real magic comes from the sheen in the water.  Just brilliant.  You might consider whether the horizon is completely level, however.

Brilliant, Neil.  On the right track.  Not clear whether a scene like this really benefits from the larger format, as the details are fairly close.  I'd have thought that the scenes in which the subjects are fairly spaced out, even out in the distance, is where the larger format would be worth the squeeze.  But for your trial and error purposes it is perfectly fine and you've done really well.  Congrats.

Neil - lovely picture. It's weird - I wish I could help you. The problems seem to be a dark streak through the left-hand rose and those light areas on the left and right edges. Those light areas look a little like fogging - maybe from when you loaded the neg into the film holder? The dark streak through the rose could be a slight kink in the neg, also when you loaded it - this should be apparent if you hold the neg up against the light and look over both surfaces.

 

Otherwise the negative looks sensational.

Those of you who are drooling of boredom after seeing the same scene from me for the past week or so can blame Christoph for egging me on! LOL

 

But this doesn't demonstrate the unique color and light effect that sometime we do indeed just sit by and let pass us by...

Do take some Tri-X. I need to convince my wife I need to take all the gear and film I showed. So far I'm losing that battle... so it might just be the good old 35mm and a few rolls for me as well. Oh well, as needs must I suppose!

I'm now convinced that the problem comes from the emulsion side was down and not up. the lines match the bottom of the developing tray...........I will go out today and shoot something else and make sure the neg is the correct way up.

 

Its a shame though as I enjoy shooting flowers with a nice glass of Red Wine :) :)
