For the month of May, a giant chrome blow up ballerina was placed in Rockefeller Center in NYC.  She towered over us with her grace.

 

Her last day was last Friday and so I went in the morning with my Linhof Technika Press 6x9 (which, like Jean-Marc, I also rec'd from my late Father) and some Velvia 50 and Ektar and shot her for the memories (and for a nice print opportunity :)  )

 

I'd love any feedback on these, which POVs are cool etc.

 

The first two were with the Zeiss 53mm Biogon (big brother to the SWC lens, only much older).

First is the Velvia 50

Both Ektar for me Adam.

2nd one, and the fourth, the grad to "reduce" the bystanders works for me too.

Interesting statue.

Adam, what a treat to have such a graceful sculpture to admire, if only for a limited time. Numbers one and four resonate the most with me. One has a slightly better perspective in my view, with her isolated fully against the background building, although perhaps the colours of the next one, on Ektar, are slightly preferable - while fully saturated, they make the Velvia colours look almost garish (who'd have thought?). Number four really works well, isolating her against the dark - thinking through it with the ND was thinking time well spent - the slight hint of people give it that context but without being "about" the people - it is all about the sculpture. Magnificent work and, as with Jean-Marie, using a camera that your Dad used must give you a very very special connection. A lovely set of photos.

Thanks a lot, Gary and Phil.  I really appreciate your time and careful look.  Your opinion means a lot.  Like Phil, I am slightly torn by the better POV in the Velvia and the arguably better color rendition of the Ektar in the 1st and 2nd (although I personally enjoy the uniqueness of the Velvia 50).  I personally was leaning more toward the 1st, as having the full view of the Rockefeller Center building is the better trade.  Again, I really appreciate your opinion!!

Nice, an interesting sculpture indeed. For me #4 stands out. It seems to best show the scale, and the use of your ND filter does its part, particularly with the schematic figures on the left bottom of the sculpture. So rather than eliminating the people, to me they aid to put the sculpture in context. As to the use of film, ektar to me too is clearly the preferrable option.

I really like all of them, but the Velvia colors I prefer. Last August I was for the first time in my life in NYC. My favorate place was, where you shooted the pictures

Just trying to get my head around this. When I shot the film I underexposed my metered shadows by 2 stops to get the shadows in zone 3........How do I recover my highlights in the developing of the neg.....do I add developing time or remove time........my feeling is to remove time to make the highlights whiter.....is that correct??

second is with Ektar - interesting similarities to the Velvia 50, though still different 

 

Adam , perhaps a bit more vivid with Velvia vs Ektar and also a bit more contrast specially the statue :)

But I prefer the blue of the sky with Ektar

Neil , may be open a bit the apert. lens of the enlarger .To obtain whiter a picture corner, if the time is too long

you'll get darker on the paper . I think you must make some tests first  with small pieces of paper before you enlarge

the entire picture .

For me it's fine and beautiful like that , Neil. The weather as you said is grey !

I am not in favor of modifying as in digital (by photo software , a bad habit) the

atmosphere of the photo.Stay Nature  !

If I am you, and to highlight the tree trunk , I'll let some more seconds in the

developer and watch directly the result in the darkroom with your red lamp !

Neil, when  I develop the picture of trees * (at right) I want to highlight them , so

I push some more seconds in the developer in watching constantly the result

and I stop development , when I see it's fine :)
