I need to ask a favour.

My Nikon Coolscan 9000 has a broken flap/door thing at the front. I've taken it to the Camera Clinic who said they could get parts, but now they tell me they can't get THAT part. Does anyone know where I could possibly get a spare front flap? Alternatively, does anyone know of smeone who may be able to 3D print one?

Thanks a lot for your help. Great pics above, BTW.

Phil, I have the Coolscan 8000. I assume(!) that flap thing is similar or the same. I am nor sure that it is essential for the operation of the unit. My impression is that it is there to keep dust out. The sliding door that closes over it actuates a micro switch to facilitate operation and I had problems with that. Orlando (the techy @ CC) said he could permanently activate it if the mechanics became a problem.

Maybe have a conversation with them about it.

A colour shot before we get back into some aerials.

Fuji (possibly Velvia)

I'm personally not a fan of waterfall pictures at all generally, but I forgive you for this one Gary, lovely and vibrant capture.

As an aside, the foreground bush area looks considerably "higher" than the buildings. This is an illusion I take it?

Yes, that's weird. It's like one of those well known optical illusions where once you see the picture in a certain way, it is difficult to shake that way of seeing it.

Thanks a LOT John, that really helps. I did speak with Nicky about it and they're holding it over until I can find a part, but she didn't mention that. I'll ask Orlando on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Thanks, Gary (and Ian).  It was horribly gray and overcast and color wouldn't haven't come out impressive at all.  I purposely went up to the observation deck with the cloud formations and B&W film in mind.  I think this may be  one of those photos that is better appreciated in a wet print, and will try my hand at doing one (or better put, guiding my printer in my lab at doing one).   That is interesting about the optical illusion, particularly since it is such a long focal length..hmm..thanks for noticing :)

It's a nice shot Adam, but the honest side of me says "Heck, the way he makes colour smoke, this would have been awesome".

Don't take it negatively, but if you had Ektar/Portra/Velvia in another back, slip a shot up please.

Awsome J-M. I recently watched Kong Skull Island which looked a bit like this. Dramatic.

Thanks a lot Eoin !

This is great Chris, almost an overwhelming amount of detail which requires the eye to scan around to grasp it all.

Virtually all C41 I post (except Ektar in 120) in this thread is shot at two stops overexposure without any problems at all.

I have been reading a bit on shooting color film. There seems a huge school of shooters out there who advocate "overexposure," possibly as many as two or three stops, above meter readings rendered for the film's stated ISO value. I have been treating my color film the same as my B&W and just shooting per stated ISO value. Are the rest of you folks doing the same?, or are you treating your color film as though it has a  lower ISO value?

Best,

Wayne

For iOS there's LB Loupe which doesn't scan but allows viewing the images on b&w and C41 negs fairly easily.

I thought this might be interesting to film users. It's a Kickstarter campaign to fund the development of a smartphone app (iOS and Android) that allows you to quickly capture a negative to a positive image with your smartphone. I figure it would be good for previsualization and review before you get into your full scanning or darkroom print workflow.

I opted in early so that I can be part of the beta testing. :D

Awesome photo, really very nice.

Phil, do you really need that door? I always find it annoying because it just vibrates and causes unnecessary noise. Unless it is required for the scanner to work, I'd just put a piece of pack or duct tape over it when the scanner is working.

This is very nice, excellent framing, interesting shadows and it also shows what an entirely different film Tri-X is in 120 compared with in 135. Well done.

This is very cool Adam, well done lining up the verticals like this and creating a really graphic cityscape image. Would look amazing blown up 1x1 meters (or bigger).
