Thanks Henry. I haven't used the lens a great deal but I have posted a few photos taken with it, though perhaps not in this particular thread. I'm not so convinced about the bokeh – something I have discussed recently in another thread.

This is great Ian. I almost nailed a similar shot last weekend but the little bugger decided, quite rudely, to fly away before I'd pressed the shutter.

So I shot a roll of Ektar at EI400 but forgot to tell the lab...Still came out rather well after some ACR massage. I couldn't 'lift' exposure much more on the first one without blowing out the yellows so it looks perhaps a bit underexposed. And on the second one I should have framed better to avoid the foreground flower getting in the way (silly, because I don't have any parallax to blame). The first was shot with my new lens, the 350mm f/4 Tele-Tessar FE with a 2x extender plus two extension rings. I just had to try that combo. It's a cool lens with only 1,9m minimum focusing distance.

Btw I'm really warming to Ektar and doing my best to learn how it reacts in various lighting conditions.

What I mean Ian it's the nice bokeh by color in background  :)

Great pictures Philip with superb and natural color

I don't know Hasselblad , but you have a macro position on your 80 Planar ?

or extension tube ?

Thanks for posting

Thank you Henry. The 80 Planar is not bad for close-ups. At closest distance of 0,6m a 31x31cm object will fill the frame. Not macro but still quite ok. I used two extension tubes, 32mm and 16mm which is just over half of the 80mm focal length so meaning around half life-size. On the 350mm lens I also used a 2x extender.

Thank you for the great photograph. This is a lens I have considered for some period of time. I think, despite the information provided on www, I have had difficulty in understanding it, the lens. If I may: 1) does this lens- mounted directly to camera- perform as well as, or better, than the 2.8 90mm Elmarit?, and 2) do you recall approximate distance between the front of the lens and this beautiful insect and flower? I do not recall ever using a focal length above 50mm in dim light and have the Elmarit. Your photo inspires toward giving up the security of 2.8..........You know, oddly enough- and I expected the opposite- this plunge into film photography has pretty much cleansed me of my obsession with fast aperture ratings in lens selection and purchase.

Wayne, if you asked this question in another thread you'd probably get Jeff S respond that Erwin Puts rates the Macro Elmar-M as one of the best Leica 90mm lenses ever. That may be true but in non-close up mode I doubt whether this lens is better (or arguably as smooth) as the last 90 Elmarit. I have owned the Elmarit but not concurrently with the Macro Elmar, nor have I ever been a big user of this focal length, so I don't feel qualified to offer any firm judgements as to whether one is better than the other. The way I see it is that the Macro Elmar has two major selling points: 1) close focus ability and the highest reproduction ratio of any M lens (even without the googles) and 2) compact size. I think you have to value either or both of those features because otherwise it is absurdly priced (at least if bought brand new at RRP) and arguably without great 'character'.

To answer your other question, the distance to the Tortoiseshell was between 0.5m and 0.76m, the close-focus range of the lens when attached using the googles. (Judging by the reproduction size and the skittishness of these butterflies I'd think probably closer to 0.76m than 0.5m). The goggles are great and having the ability to reach near macro magnification using an M is a real boon to the system but if macro is the principal objective, and weight is not a major consideration, I'd argue that there are better tools for the job. For example, you can buy a new Nikon F6 and 105/F2.8G VR lens for less than the cost of the 90 Macro set and it will be considerably more useful for taking photographs of butterflies, for example. The biggest downside to the 90 with goggles is that the focussing range is very restricted compared with the Nikon 105 that will let you focus from infinity to close enough to get 1:1 reproduction. Having to take the goggles on and off to change between focussing ranges is a bit of a pain.

Here's some 20 years out of date Ektachrome that has just come back, M4p

I think i should have rated it at 100 instead of 200

I am glad you rated however you did. That second shot will stay with me. I think it is spectacular.
