Ha, ha, Henry.  yes, I remember this photo and all of the controversy it caused in the Street Photography forum.   :)

While this COULD  have been taken in Jerusalem, here are some similar photos ACTUALLY taken in Jerusalem :) :)

#3 for me Philip;  the water and reflection takes my eyes from the foreground, deep into the center of the frame.

I'm wondering if I might have your thoughts on these four framings of the scene? I haven't harmonised the colour between them but just left Adobe Camera Raw at 'as shot'. I had to shoot them in a fairly quick succession because the sun was just about to disappear below the horizon (which it did in the last one). There are 2000dpi scans on Flickr for those who want to grain peep :)

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Klaus, very nice B&W images. In my recent quest to get into MF, I have been considering a Rolleiflex as an option to shoot on the street handheld. I am now deep into this rabbit hole and realize that there are several models with different lenses. I am recently understanding the differences in lens character between the Planars and the Tessars (and the Schneider equivalents). After seeing the used prices on the Planar models, I might be considering going for a Tessar model. I've been scouring the web to try to find images created with the Tessar to see if the characteristics are something i can live with.

Which lens does your Rolleiflex have?

Thanks

The 3,5F has a Planar lens, but to be honest: At f 5,6 I can´t tell, if a picture was taken with a Planar, a Tessar, a Xenotar oder a Xenar, at f3,5 there might be a tiny advantage for the planar, but in real life.. I own a 3,5A, 3,5B, 3,5C, T, 2,8C, Roleicord V an Vb.

So if you could get a nice, full working Rolleiflex T oder 3,5B instead of a worn out 3,5C or 3,5F it might be a better choice. The T, the 3,5F and the Rolleicord Vb do have a brighter Screen (instead of the old glass screens) and a detachable chimney- finder. The T and the Vb are also able to make

6x4.5 images with another gear set. So a late Rolleicord Vb in good condition (they were built until the 70´s) would be the best bang for the buck, if the focus is just on image quality. Lightweight, high quality lens, reliable. The Tessars and Xenars are sharp and contrasty lenses. The Rolleiflex TLR is quiet, lightweight and the best compromise between image Quality, image size and weight, in my opinion.

made with a Rolleiflex T (Tessar 3,5 on Tmax 400):

Ooh another Rolleiflex image! Has anybody heard of the law of attraction? I'm more aware now that I want one. And the itch is itchy  :D

And this law certainly applies to the SWC, believe me.

It's an itch that I scratched recently.

So the 2nd picture was shot almost wide open, f4, i think. Discussions about 6- lens planar vs. 5- lens planar...  you know...

Klaus. Very helpful. Thanks. I have no hesitation going for a Tessar type now, in fact I almost want some wabi character on the wider apertures now that I think of it. Might make for interesting portrait and street shots. If I want tack sharp I have a 4x5 with modern Rodenstock glass, or stop down a Rollei and use a tripod.  :)
