I agree with Jean Marc, but I think your flickr link may have given it away (at least for me! :) )

Love this photo Adam, especially the reaction of the little girl. Wonderful!

Thanks, Charles :) :)

Guest zaragata

Henry asked for more contre-jour pictures. This one is not contre-jour per se, but I think illustrates what Henry was talking about, the ability of film to render detail in both shadow and strong sunlight:

I will venture an opinion on film's ability to render 'more' detail in shadows and highlights, than digital capture.

Certainly film can capture it, but, in my experience and observation, it can only be fully exploited when scanned and converted to a digital file for further reproduction. Darkroom printing of a filmic image can be surpassed by desktop printing of the same negative, in expert hands of course and with quality equipment. The fact that printing papers have such a limited tonal range, IMO actually enhances the look of analog prints. But they don't match digital printing for the ability to reproduce a wide range of tones.

Frankly I use and enjoy both, although my darkroom days are shrinking, mainly because of the necessary wastage of materials to perfect the final print and the time involved. Also, age is catching up on me although I hate to admit it.

Is this directed at my post? Please disregard the following if not.

It was not my intention to say that film does something to the exclusion of digital - I said it shows film's ability, not that it was able to render "more" detail than digital. I have little interest personally in what digital can and can't do - it is a medium that I tried and, for a host of reasons, abandoned in favour of film. So I consciously try to avoid making comparative statements. Henry had been talking about film's abilities in regards to contre-jour lighting, and it is to this that I addressed my comments.

I am interested in what I can get out of film, and to this end hope to get a darkroom up and running again this year - it has been too many years without one for me. And like you, there's the age thing catching up - in fact I'm off now to have an MRI!

I like the grain and staring driver/empty space on the right of frame, gives a feel of menace.

Erl and Phil , you're right about the scan result, an Imacon scan.and a analog MF give something

better than digital MF (examples in Chris pictures) . I'll post for you a table in comparison

if you want.

That said for "contre-jour"  I have compared (please look at my posts above)

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/205842-i-like-filmopen-thread/?p=3172772

and here:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/205842-i-like-filmopen-thread/?p=3172780

showing the insufficiency and lack of digital for details and color in the shadows

in comparison.

Best

Henry
