I think this is a sterling shot, Adam, and I like several things: the light, which is terrific and has rendered beautifully on the Ektar, the fact that the sunlight seems to 'hug' the bridge (darker top left corner and under the bridge to the left), the juxtaposition of the rocks and the bridge, that the rocks look lit from behind the camera which gives a nice 'studio' feel to the photo, and overall that this is a New York view I don't think I've ever seen before. The one little thing that might be adjusted is the darker part on the water which juts into the frame from the left, just above the upper-most rocks. It certainly doesn't affect the quality of the image and is more due to my own nitpicking when it comes to framing (often to the detriment of a good image, I admit), but cropping from the top-left could, I think, possibly remove it and might also further strengthen the really cool tension between the bridge and the rocks. Overall well worth the lost sleep :)

Thanks Ian, I agree they are quite dominant. I was a bit surprised when I saw how the slide turned out and also that the other one I posted didn't have as clearly pentagonal specular highlights (though they're much less bright which might have something to do with it). I generally like how the Planar gives these sparkly unusually-shaped highlights, though I know many don't.

I'm not a bokeh aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, Philip, but the pentagonal effects in the background are quite interesting (and possibly a little distracting).

For Gary(NZ), who quite some time ago asked for a comparison FOV for SWC vs SA21...Finally, I did something about it. Not very revealing photo's, and all were handheld from generally the same spot, without paying much attention to centre of focus, but...

Thanks a lot, Gary and Christoph.

Christoph - This was my first time shooting this particular scene.  I stand by the Ektar for extracting some surreality out of what really was quite ordinary, as it was a very disappointing cloudless morning.  I moved around the little bay once the sun started coming up  thinking about how much of a waste of a good night sleep I could have had and then I saw some interesting colors coming out of the horizon from the east (which is what this photo is facing).  I like how the ektar enhanced the colorful morning glow that I saw.  And I used a 2 stop ND grad to keep good exposure in the foreground.  Didn't have to open the shadows a bit i post.

Adam, I would still bring the blacks down . No need for so much infos in the foreground as it's more a graphic shot overall, saying this just to contribute as we know you always like some feedback :-).

Huge thanks, J, Philip and Jean Marc.  This is really how this thread is distinguishable from FB and Flickr.  People spend a bit more time with a friendly and critical eye and then spend more time to express their views.  So thanks.

Philip - Thanks very much and I want to be sure I understand where you are coming from.

Is the below the slight crop you were envisioning?  To be clear, I was facing essentially north and the sun was rising from the left.  So parts of the sky on the right were still blue relative to the burst of sun coming from the left.  Also, the very low placement of the sun led to unevenness in the falling of the light on the ground/water.  In this case the unevenness didn't strike me as an issue.  But I want to make sure I take your point.

Jean Marc - Thanks for chiming in and I think you are right.  It is sometimes not so easy working with a flat scanned file to know when you've reached that optimal balance between blacks and midtones.  In this case, I am not sure I would go as far as you did, but deeper blacks are - I agree - most certainly in order.

Here is a comparison of my original post and one with deeper blacks.   Would love to get views on this time permitting!

Original (again)

Here's a version with deeper blacks, as (I think aptly) suggested by Jean Marc...
